I think if Young had stayed out on the wing instead of being the second striker he would of had far more of an impact this season and would probably of won player of the year. Now he's back out wide the difference is for all to see. But for me Downing has been really consistant this season and played really really well.

Albrighton or Clarke. I can't decide. They've both had fantastic seasons breaking into the first team. Albrighton has been more stand out with his performances and those great runs down the wing. Clarke has shown so much maturity in his football and when he's been asked to do a role he has done it so well. I just can't make my mind up.

As for Bent being player of the year, if he'd had the whole season here maybe so. He's been brilliant since January. I feel it a bit harsh on a player like downing to vote for bent and he's been here for 3 months.

I would say Downing definitely. I was not sure how he would take to playing on the right side, but it seems like he's played there all his career.

Young player for me is Clark. Done a good job under difficult circumstances and come out a player that I would have confidence in playing anywhere across the defence or midfield. Great utility player to have around.

Downing also had a poor spell around Xmas/January. It's been such a poor season by most of our original senior players, Downing is the only one that has looked half decent. I still think he has huge room for improvement, especially on his final delivery but compared to last season he's like a different player. Delighted that after such a nasty injury he's managed to get his game back together and appears to really enjoy his football.

Clark came in and did a man's job of whatever was asked of him. I really hope he gets the chance to further develop next season.

Honourable mentions to NRC and Albrighton plus Bent and Walker for their impact over the last 3 months.

I don't think he has.

Albrighton has certainly played more minutes in league games according to fantasy league stats. And I'm assuming Albrighton was subbed off more than Clark so he would have started more.

I agree Albrighton has gone off the boil a bit of late. But I think Clark has had a fair few ropey performances as he  adjusts to different positions. I'd always consider putting Albrighton in the team when everyone's fit; with Clark at the moment I can't say I would. He needs to be stronger against physical opponents.

Downing has been one of the few success stories this season and obviously thrives on GH's management compared to MON. Can't see beyond him really. clark has done okay, well more than okay given the circumstances. I'd probably give it to Allbrighton though

Or maybe he was coming back from injury, and struggled without a pre-season, so was always going to be better this season no matter who was in charge?

Title: Re: Senior Player and Young Player Of The Year
Post by: Greg N'Ash on April 21, 2011, 10:50:31 AM
I think if you concede that some players haven't responded to GH's management, then you have accept that some have. Heskey, hasn't pulled up any trees this season but for 99% of MON's reign he was an embarrassment frankly
Title: Re: Senior Player and Young Player Of The Year
Post by: Concrete John on April 21, 2011, 10:55:35 AM
Undoubtedly - the youth players especially seem to be thriving under him.  But with Downing I think it's more the issue of his fitness last season than MON not getting enough out of him.
Title: Re: Senior Player and Young Player Of The Year
Post by: Greg N'Ash on April 21, 2011, 10:59:33 AM
Dunno. I don't think you necessarily have to be 100% fit to be involved in games. Granted, his poor showing last season was undoubtably partly a confidence issue after the injury.

especially when you consider the lack of team confidence, injuries, strange tactics, before we had darren bent, etc...

i am looking forward to seeing what he can do with darren bent in a more settled and confident team...

(oh, and for the record, in the premier league, the bestest player to ever float above the earth (its the ears i reckon), gareth bale, has 7 goals and 2 assists in 2161 mins... that doesnt include the champs league qualifiers or champs league proper though... which takes him up to 11 and 11 in 3069 mins, although 5 assists do come in 172 mins of cl qualification... 4 and 4 in 732 mins of cl proper)...

I never knew but it's hardly a surprise. Ashley and Downing really need to work on their final ball, otherwise, what was the point of signing Bent? Albrighton, though still learning, knows exactly where the danger area is and generally gets the ball in there.

It's funny how for the 3rd season in a row (I think) player of ther year will go to somebody who was being slated the season before.

Downing this year, Milner last year and Petrov the year before. Ok, maybe Milner wasnt getting slated, but I think a lot of people werent exactly bowled over by him.

So who will it be next year???

Was 50/50 between Downing and Young (A) for senior player, so would be quite happy to see Downing win it.

Think Albrighton's been good, but Clark's impressed me immensely and showed his adaptability to play well in a number of positions. Thought he was excellent those few games he played in midfield.

Downing won FX Pro player, Player's Player and Supporters' Player.

I can work out the last two, but what the f*ck is the FX Pro Player?

commercial revenue.

Wouldve gone for Albrightons goal against Man U as goal of the season instead of his one at Fulham

George Boateng had played more Premier League games than any other continental European footballer.

Goodnight.

For me the player of the season award sums up for me how bad this team has been this season.

Albrighton and Clark have showed potential this season but need to kick on and become quality players and not turn into the Luke Moore, Darius Vassell and possibly Gabbies of this world. They need to keep their feet on the ground and keep working hard. I am hoping albrighton needs a break as his performance sat second half was not to the standard he set first of the season but they deserve recognition.

In respect to a player of the season their just isnt one as for me they have all been poor. Downing has performed better than last season but that wasnt hard. The ball at his feet he is gifted but for me he lacks drive desire and when he hasnt got the ball he is a luxury.

Put Kyle Walkers hunger into stewart downing then u would have a player.

Im sorry if this offends but no senior player deserves this award for me. Bent's goals and Walker second half of the season have done more than most in an entire season and i would include downing in that.

My favourite stat.

Does it matter that he was born in Ghana though?

Though Downing was best of a bad bunch, I'm sure they few that received their awards were a little embarrassed by it all. Especially Albrighton, who let's face it has been pants since January.
