You could argue this is one of the most important games of the season.  Win, and I'd say we're definitely safe.  We'd be 8 points clear of West Ham, and could breathe a bit of a sigh of relief.  Lose, and we'd be right back down in the shit.  I'm going for a draw, as I think we'll prolong the agony a bit longer.

From McAllister on official site: "The management team use one of the world leaders in sports match analysis, tracking technology and data creation while scouts give them detailed dossiers on the opposition for each given weekend."
Yeah?  As in Villa 0 Wolves 1 (Jarvis), Villa 0 Sunderland 1 (Bardsley), plus numerous goals conceded from set pieces....

2-1 to them

It's more important to us, though, than the Newcastle game was to Newcastle.

We could go 4-4-2 in this because they will attack us, which could give us space on the counter. It would be risky, though, as their 4-3-3 has looked successful recently and could dominate us in midfield if we're not careful. I'll go for a draw.

Hoping that the fact that they're under huge pressure makes them too nervous. A bit like we were for the first 20 minutes against Newcastle.

Tough call this one. They will see it as a must win while we will know a win would more or less guarantee our safety.

We are under less pressure but the incentive for three points is there given our final two fixtures. I can see us winning 2-1. Bent and Petrov!

They'll have to come at us, which will leave them exposed at the back. Defensively they are not good, but then again we haven't exactly been clinical ourselves of late, and we're always likely to concede under severe pressure. We have to take our chances, and we will get them in this game. They are going to be under a lot more pressure than us, and the recent internal rumblings from last weekend won't help them. A draw won't be the end of the world for us, but it would be a blow for them. I'll take 1-1, but I think if we can ride the inevitable storm at the start, we can win this one.

It's not always possible to break very quickly, sometimes the angles are shut off for you (and teams will do this especially against us because we have a reputation for counter-attacking well). In those situations, it's better to keep the ball. I seem to remember us very much looking for the out-ball every time we could.

Yes, when we would give the ball away more often but were so set-up to counter that it could be devastating.

From the WHU games I've seen this season, they certainly put the effort in and aren't actually that bad a team. They've a very decent midfield and whoever GH puts out there will have a battle on their hands. They've recently put in some good performances (Man Utd, Everton and Spurs) so I'm not expecting a walk in the park. The only positive is they look weak at the back, especially Upson, so we really need to create chances for Bent who can really punish them. I expect them to go 442 for this one, mainly to stamp out the treat of Ashley and Downing, plus trying to dominate the midfield.

I'd take a point now but expect us to go down 2-1. I just get the feeling they'll want it more than us and at this stage of the year, that counts a lot. Saying that, if we can get an early goal we could really hurt them. We're long overdue a top performance so you never know.

I think it is absolutely essential that we scrap 4-4-2 for this game as Spam genuinely play a three in Parker, Noble and Hitz which would absolutely butcher our midfield two. I'd drop Makoun and Gabby and bring in NRC and Delph.

A win would be very nice as it would all but ensure survival and will condemn West Ham to going down. A loss would be bad as it would hand some initiative to them in their battle for survival.

I'll go 1-0 to us. Bent.

One of my nasty feelings about this one

2-1 or 2-0 to them, just think they will want it more than us and they will have targeted this match as very winnable...

I was mightily concerned last week about how many of our players really wanted it against Newcastle given how pivotal the game was

Petrov definitely, Gabby and Collins maybe but not really any of the rest....

We just need to make sure we don't lose. Back to MON style again. Cuellar at right back. Petrov and NRC in the middle. Logic says play 433 with makoun in there too. But we could play gabby up top and look to exploit their defence with direct play on the break. Gabby could drop wide if we need 3 in the middle.

Upson looks all over the place and I don't like the look of tomkins or da costa either.

But they are strong in centre midfield, esp if Parker is fit. And they have lively fwd options too, though piqiuionne and the guy from inter have faded after bright starts.

Likely to be raucous which doesn't bode well. Plus every time we look to be on the right track we fuck it up

I'd take a draw though as it'll keep a gap between us,and they have to go to Chelsea and City soon, and also i'm in the West Ham end,so don't wanna do fake applause surrounded by cockneys, mockneys and Essex boys.

2-2.

West Ham 1-3 Villa
Friedel

Heskey Bent

That could work, though it would mean we have to sit deep, keep it tight and look for the ball out to Heskey on the counter. A viable tactic, but with our defensive record it's definitely a risky one.

Think much the same. realistically they have to win their 3 home games to stay up. lose this and they've only really got a possible 6 points from home. Their away games are nasty with chelsea and Citeh and wigan away won't be easy. 38 points ain't enough imo. a draw ain't much cop either.  we on the other hand would class a draw as a good result, but i think they'll want it more

West Ham v Aston Villa

Aston Villa got over the line last Sunday by beating Newcastle but their performance was only OK at best.

You have to think they can improve and build on that but, in contrast, West Ham got a thumping at Bolton and look like they are just starting to dip again after a good run.

I don't think there will be much between these sides and I am pretty sure Villa boss Gerard Houllier would settle for a point at Upton Park. Out of the two clubs, you worry a lot more about West Ham's survival prospects than you do about Villa's.

Prediction: 1-1

Atmosphere should be very tense

Yes they have Chelsea and Citeh next I think so lose this and they are right in it...tense nervy 1-1

I think it's going to be really important not to let our heads drop if we happen to find ourselves trailing by a goal or two. Any team right down at the bottom finds it very hard to close out the final ten minutes or so, just like we did last week against Newcastle. Let's hope we don't fall behind but if we do, we just have to throw caution to the wind and keep on piling on the pressure and then just wait for the panic to set in and for mistakes to happen.

A win or draw is important in the sense that we can then take some confidence/momentum into the Stoke game
Defeat would mean another Newcastle type encounter against Stoke, with the added pressure of knowing Stoke are half decent

I wish the whole season was based on one game and that game being the first of the season. We'd probably be 20 points clear at the top of the league. The point being, West Ham have been battling all season, despite the circus that they've suffered off field with the Porn Dwarfs, the distraction of the Olympic stadium, the threat of the sack hanging over Grant for most of it, injuries to key players, losing a cup semi-final, they've never stopped fighting whilst being in the bottom three for most of the time.

Their recent form shows they're not as bad as some would imagine. Look at their last six games; a brilliant fightback after being 3-0 down to draw 3-3 at the Baggies, a 3-1 home win against Liverpool followed by a 3-0 home win against Stoke, then a goalless draw away at Spurs and going 2-0 up at home to Man Utd before losing 2-4. Admittedly they got hit last week away at Bolton but the thing I've admired about them this season is that despite everything going wrong for them, they've never stopped fighting and trying to play their game. Grant deserves a lot of credit for keeping them with still a chance of staying up this season.

One thing about tomorrow is guaranteed, it's going to be a very tough game. I just hope the lads are prepared for it.

Which were?

Downing has responded defiantly to criticism by radio pundit Martin that Villa might not have the character for a relegation scrap.

“He is not in our changing room, he doesn’t know anything,” he added.

“If he thinks we’ve got no team spirt, we could have easily faltered against Newcastle.

“I think that is the biggest thing here. We stuck together. We have a great set of lads.

“Team spirit is a big thing at every football club and fighting and tackling and making blocks and filling in for each other.

‘‘That is all part of being a team and even the bench was buzzing in the changing room after the last game.

“If it wasn’t there, we’d be in trouble.

Downing, who scored in Villa’s comprehensive opening day 3-0 win over the Hammers, added: “It’s easy for Alvin Martin to talk.

“Who did he play for? West Ham? I think he should look at West Ham.

“I’d tell you if the team spirit wasn’t there. It’s probably the biggest thing we’ve got, team spirit.”

Halsey's last Villa game saw us victorious over West Brom, while he last visited Upton Park when Liverpool were the visitors, as the reds lost 3-1.

The assistants are unchanged, leaving Simon Long (yellow flag) and Mike Cairns (chequered) with Andy D'Urso 4th official.

Too many comments regarding referee(s). Too many excuses in advance. Jeeps even I think we will win this one - not with a clean sheet mind.

NRC should start - with Petrov and maybe Delph. Cuellar in at right back and Bent to rip them a new backside with help from our wantaway wingers.

If Parker doesn't play then 4-4-2 is ok - note this is not the stupid 4-4-1-1 that Cluesless likes from his beloved Liverpool days. Rumour has it Dyer (and he has been) is playing.  :)

Young is on his way regardless of what happens this season. Anyone who thinks otherwise is deluded. We'll get the upfront fee + add ons back. Downing is the modern day Mark Walters - looks good with some eye catching goals but overall contribution to the team? Sub optimal. I think he will be gone too - to Liverpool I reckon.

Young may leave, but it was a very bizarre comment considering neither has said they actually want to go. Do you know them both well? How can they be wantaway if neither has said they want to leave? Downing has been one of our better players this year, if not the best. I would be willing to bet you anything you can afford he will still be here by September 1st.

Alan McInally speaks

The relegation picture should be a lot clearer after this weekend, with most of the bottom sides facing each other.

I think I can still hear the roar of relief coming from Villa Park after the Newcastle win and another three points down at West Ham will just about see Villa safe.

One look at their away record tells you why Villa can’t be mega-confident but in these situations it sometimes helps to be the visiting side, with the pressure piled on the hosts.

It is a massive game for both clubs and there will be no hiding places for the 22 men on the pitch.

Villa have the class to tell, though, and they can claim the win that would spell disaster for the Hammers, who then face back-to-back road trips against Chelsea and Man City.

SCOTT PARKER is set to miss the next THREE games in West Ham's battle to beat the dreaded drop.

The inspirational midfielder is definitely out of today's six-pointer at home to Aston Villa because of an Achilles injury.

And Hammers boss Avram Grant is considering resting Parker for the tough away matches at Chelsea and Manchester City.

That would leave Parker fit for the final three matches when they host Blackburn, travel to Wigan and entertain Sunderland.

The England star, 30, had an anti-inflammatory jab on his sore heel last night.

But it is believed rest and recuperation is the best treatment for the club's most important player.

Grant feels his third-bottom side need three wins to stay up.

And he is prepared to leave captain Parker out, hoping he will be ready for the last three matches against clubs who could all still be in the relegation mix.

The midfielder has been soldiering on with the problem for two weeks having first picked it up while on duty with England in the Euro 2012 qualifier in Wales last month.

Former Villa star Thomas Hitzlsperger admits the Hammers must bounce back after being undone in a 3-0 thrashing at Bolton last week.

And the adopted Cockney, who learnt to speak English the Brummie way, insists he will have no qualms about punching the air should he score against a club for whom he still has deep affection.

The 29-year-old German, who spent five years with the Midlanders from 2000, said: "I'm a West Ham player now.

"Although it was good at the time at Villa, our fans would be hugely disappointed if they had a player who doesn't seem happy when he scores for the team.

"The Villa team has changed completely.

"The managers change frequently, there is a new owner and among the players it's only Gabby Agbonlahor that I played with. But I still know the staff. I always follow them because I had a good time there and people looked after me.

"Usually I'm quite spontaneous and you'll see a smile on my face.

"I would be delighted if we win the game and if I can contribute - it doesn't take away from anything about having a good time there.

"First of all, I want to win the game. I'm not the type of player to prepare for any celebrations so I don't know what I'm doing if I end up scoring a goal.

"We're missing Scott Parker but I'm optimistic we'll have a good game. Unfortunately we miss him for this game and possibly the week after.

"After such a disappointing game against Bolton you could see the players were disappointed."

Carlton Cole will lead the front line in a match billed as 'Best of British' by the Hammer hierarchy despite the team being peppered with foreigners like Hitzlsperger.

West Ham insist the tag for today's match is to mark St George's Day next Saturday when the Hammers go to Stamford Bridge.

Striker Cole goes before the FA next week on an improper conduct charge for tweeting a joke about immigration and the 20,000 Ghana fans at England's friendly against the Africans last month.

Angry boss Grant said: "To charge Carlton Cole with racism is a joke.

"I don't think they will do anything even when they are trying to charge everybody and everything.

"They need to calm down and deal with the main problems and not things like this.

"Not one person I have spoken

Based on the fact that if they lose and results go against them elsewhere they're going to struggle to get the points to stay up with their remianing games. Its a must win game for them IMO.  We on the other hand, had a must win game last week but today's game was not one i was counting on to get the points to stay up. I'm sure they'll come at us with all guns blazing which could play into our hands with Parker missing. Get a goal on the break and i reckon any head of steam they've built up will evaporate.

And Hammers boss Avram Grant is considering resting Parker for the tough away matches at Chelsea and Manchester City.

Lunacy, IMO.

I can't believe Grant's still there personally when's he's been clueless for much of the season.. Can only imagine their board were so ashamed with the MON debacle, that they feel unable to give him the chop. if they lose today i wouldn't be surprised if they get rid and bring someone in for a last gasp gamble at staying up

What's all this bollocks about West Ham being more motivated and wanting it more? They need it more perhaps but who says they'll show more desire? Based on what?

Yeah, as I said, they need it more but that doesn't mean they'll prove more motivated and hungry.

Win today and we are all but safe I reckon. It would leave us 8 points clear of them with 5 games left...and 9 points clear of Wigan if they lose today.

Then we can start our charge for 8th!

Come on Villa...

After Downings comments in reply to Alvin Martin's, I am feeling confident.

3-1 to Villa

From Birmingham Mail

Brilliant response from easily our player of the season.

Only as ironic as Friedel saying we're good going forward.

Now more confident now I have realised Parker isn't playing.

I said last wek, Bent suits playing away, he gets much more room.

Before today I said 1-1 - now, without Parker I think we will win 2-0.

Bent and a defender from a set piece

Reo-Coker and Petrov start in the centre of midfield, according to AVFC. I wonder if that's just the two of them, with Makoun on the bench?

Nice, clear tactics: keep it tight in midfield with two genuine deep midfielders, looking to Heskey for the outball and look to use the wings on the break.

Heskey in for gabby!

Not sure about this one. Heskey was good earlier on the season but not done much since Xmas. I'd have thought gabby's pace would have been a threat today.

Looking forward to seeing Heskey and Bent a a partnership. In theory that should work pretty well - Heskey is a very good foil for a goal poacher like Bent, I reckon.

As 4-4-2 goes for us, that's a good team.

Other teams are certainly doing their best to help us with injuries - Everton had several key players out, as did Newcastle, and now Wham have Parker out. With that line up I fancy us to win today now rather than my earlier prediction of a draw.

Still looks a half decent side Spam have put out.  I think GH would be more than happy with a point, I can not see us being too attacking.

Very attacking line up from Wet Spam, if we defend well (oh dear...) then we could quite easily get them on the counter.

Looks like Scott Parker will miss this one.

That's a massive boost for us, he carries them.

He'll be fit, lets not be naive here
Who's naive now?

He's not playing.
