The league table looks horrific again tonight, thank fcuk we beat City and Wigan.

Really need a win in this one, won't be pretty but I expect a 2-1.

Funny fixture this of late, we routinely turn them over comfortably in the cups yet have lost three in a row against them in the league.

Need to win this because I'm going to this game and I haven't seen us win a league game since the Hull game last season. But also because my friend is coming down from Stafford and he's bringing his lad with him for the first time, so he needs to see a winning team on his first VP visit!

I'll go for 2-1. Agbonlahor and Bent for us, Kalinic for them.

Post by: CJ on February 23, 2011, 09:19:22 AM
They don't play as much hoofball since Allardyce left so there should be less pressure on Dunne & Collins as long as we mark Samba from Pedersen set pieces. We desperately need three points now - anything less and we're in deep shit.  Our players should be fresh after a two week break so a repeat of the cup game score - 3-1 to us but keeping 11 men on the pitch
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Blackburn Rovers Pre-Match Thread
Post by: PaulTheVillan on February 23, 2011, 09:28:57 AM
I really hope GH doesn't start with Petrov & NRC in the middle. We'll have no chance of creating anything.

Post by: CJ on February 23, 2011, 09:30:50 AM
Think Petrov is now well down the pecking order - he wasn't even in the squad last time out even though he was fit.  I'd have NRC in to provide some bite in midfield though

I hope GH realises this is a must win & doesn't start NRC & Petrov together.

Let's freshen it up. Ashley Young isn't playing well IMO & Gabby would be a better option coming from the bench.

Friedel
 Walker Dunne Collins Baker
   Delph Bannan Bradley
Albrighton                            Downing
Bent

He also said something about how he should have rotated more at Blackpool. Gave me the impression that he'll change players regardless of form to keep them fresh. I like the theory but not if it ends up like Ranieri's Tinkerman approach.

As I said I'm not against rotation but not everyone is as good at is Ferguson. His track record shows that he can be trusted to make the right choice more often than not; we're 16th in the league.

I fear this will be similar to Fulham - we may go into the lead but won't hold on to it. Slightest bit of resistance from the opposition and we crumble. Another draw at best I'm afraid.

We didn't crumble last time we played them and we didn't crumble against Man City or Wigan. We also showed a lot of grit to hold out when down to 10 men at Blackpool. We do have some frailties but is nowhere near as bad as some are suggesting.

Rotation is fine, but if you're going to compare against another manager's rotation record, Ferguson isn't the best one - it's easy to rotate when you've such quality in depth.

The referee will be Martin Atkinson (West Yorkshire)

His last Villa game saw us play Spurs at home, when he dismissed Defoe for a deliberate elbow. In total, Atkinson has shown 8 red cards in 27 games, 'bettered' only by Phil Dowd and Anthony Taylor, who have shown 9 and 10 reds respectively in 26 matches.

The last time Blackburn had the pleasure of Mr Atkinson was back in January, as they lost at Stamford Bridge.

He will be assisted by Glenn Turner (yellow flag) and Gary Beswick (chequered flag). The 4th official is Lee Probert.

This gives us a massive opportunity to push ourselves away from the relegation battle.  Wigan have Manu, Wolves have Blackpool and West Ham have Liverpool.  WBA don't play until Monday night (Stoke).  With Blues not playing we can really put pressure on teams around us with a win.

Anything less than a win and we'll be stuck in the mire for the remainder of the season.

Yeah I don't get this.

We routinely turn them over in the cups, won both league cup semis and also the FA cup ties. I know they don't put out their strongest team but then neither do we seeing as the Fonz and Pires both scored in the last game.

And yet they've won their last 3 league games against us?!

I don't see them posing much of a threat from open play but given how poor Friedel was at Ewood Park and for that Fulham corner, then him dealing with Pedersen's corners isn't filling me with a huge amount of confidence.

I don't think we will win this game as Blackburn are a good side and can expose or weakness at dealing with crosses into the box from set-pieces rather well.  I don't, however, think that it will mean a great deal in the context of our run in if we don't win as there are a few other more winnable games left than one against a team who have beaten us in the last 3 attempts  (2nd string cup matches apart).  I desperately hope for 3 points but it will not be the end of the world if take just 1, the teams below us are there for a reason and are unlkely to all win.

Blackburn are a good side

Are they?

They're a below average side I'd say, and their away form in particular is nothing to write home about. Not saying that we'll definitely win but there are at least a dozen teams I'd be more worried about than Blackburn.

It's another one of these 'type' of games.

Each game gets bigger and bigger, we can start to breathe ever so slightly more easily if we get the 3 points on Saturday.

We've really got to start pushing on instead of making things difficult for ourselves.

Who are these teams?

Wolves/ West Ham/ West Brom/ Wigan - Will be much harder to play as they will throw everything into the games. Plus they seem to have the bottle to pull some results out.

Stoke seem to find a way of f**king us over. If Blackburn can expose our weakness so can Stoke.

This is about the easiest fixture we have left (maybe Newcastle) so if we don't win this then were in serious shit, it's not an exaggeration.

An early goal would settle the nerves somewhat, this really is a game we should win and I think we will win 3-1. Blackburn are not a good side but a very average side away from home and I expect albrighton and Bradley to start and look forward to a decent result.

I hope GH realises this is a must win & doesn't start NRC & Petrov together.

Let's freshen it up. Ashley Young isn't playing well IMO & Gabby would be a better option coming from the bench.

Friedel
 Walker Dunne Collins Baker
   Delph Bannan Bradley
Albrighton                            Downing
Bent

Couldn't go with Delph and Bannan. One or the other. I'd agree with giving Clark a break and giving Baker a chance. I'd also play Young ahead of Albrighton. We need points and also to get his value up before the summer unfortunately.

I expect Petrov to come back in next to Bradley. Young up his hole, Gabby wasted on wing. If Houllier picks the side I expect him to we will struggle to win. Squeaky bum time

Delph Bannan Bradley in the middle would be suicide

Very limited PL experience there, tomorrow will be an ugly physical scrap and we'll need experienced heads like NRC & Stan in the engine room
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Blackburn Rovers Pre-Match Thread

We've tried NRC and petrov together and very rarely has it been effective, hence we're struggling at the bottom of the league, Delph, Bannan and Bradley would offer something different, maybe just 2 of the would be risky but playing a 3 in there me`ns they should be able to cope at home v a poorish side.

Not too sure Petrov and Engine Room go in same sentence.

I would go Albrighton - Bradley - NRC - Downing

Ged will not.

It's a must win game and not one to be making experiments, there's about 10 PL games between them in that lot and they've never played together before.

I'd go with this:

Friedel

Walker Dunne Collins Baker

          NRC Bradley Bannan

Albrighton   Bent     Young

Bench: Marshall, Clark, L Young (if fit), Downing, Petrov, Agbonlahor, Delph

Don't get this Bradley starting thing, he's totally unproven at PL Level :

Friedel

Walker Dunne Collins Clark

 Downing   NRC Petrov (c) Agbonlahor

  Bent     Young

Title: Re: Aston Villa v Blackburn Rovers Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Merv on February 25, 2011, 12:04:20 PM
Everyone's totally unproven at PL level at some stage of their career.

I'll explain my thinking. We've got Bradley for the next two and a half months before we need to make a decision on signing him permanently. A home tie v Blackburn is not a bad place to give him a start, especially with NRC alongside him and Bannan in there too. He'll hardly be ruthlessly exposed to the best midfield in the country in that situation.

That's also why I'd put Baker in for this one - he looked comfortable v the same opposition in the cup, and I'd take the chance to rest Clark (as well as having him on the bench as CB cover as we now have no other covering CBs with Cuellar injured, Davies sold, Lowry on loan and the versatile Lichaj on loan).

I'd start Albrighton as I think Givet is vulnerable to pace and a direct winger. I think he'd find Downing easier to handle.

Can we please not concede from a corner in this game im fed up of corners. When we take them the ball usually ends up in the keepers hands, against us please Friedel dont bother shouting Away! but concentrate on making an effort to get to the ball and then somehow our defense despite being quite decent in the air end up being caught out as the ball nestles in the back of our net!

Gerrard were shit at them hope we practiced in the break we had!

Win would alleviate the pressure, and in theory it looks like one of those games where we should realistically target 3 points.

So a 4-4 draw it is then.

We can't defend for shit, but at least we'll be one point closer to safety.

Wow, that's almost a whole year.  Considering the amount of times we've thrown the lead away it would have been a big help if we'd managed to come from behind every now and then to off set it.  That's a piss poor record.  Shows that we know when we are beaten, ie, 1-0 down.

Won't be popular but I wouldn't mind seeing Warnock back at LB. I think the break will have done him good since he had been carrying knocks for most of the season. Still a decent player despite the shit that's spouted about at times. Let's not forget he was in the England sqaud less than a year ago. We find ourselves in a position that requires experiene rather than throwing youngsters in and hoping for the best.

I think Bannan should start with NRC, he was the best player on the pitch against them in the cup.

Albrighton  Bannan NRC Downing
