Good team, exactly what I would've gone for apart from Walker
Title: Re: Newton Heath v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: ozzjim on February 01, 2011, 07:12:16 PM
Think NRC playing 90 on sat is much of the reason for him being benched tonight, the way GH works I can see him starting vs Fulham, rotation and freshness seems to be a real bug bear with GH in the middle of the park. Very interesting style, and something that seems totally alien after the past few years!

Strong Utd team, O'shea at right back is there weak link, Downing needs to run at him at every oportunity

Hmm, would have put Cuellar in for Walker. The young lad has a lot to learn defensively, Ferguson will make sure Nani is alert to any defensive lapses. Apart from that bring it f-ing on.

Just noticed no Bannan in the squad. Unlucky not to be involved, expect he will be against Fulham. So on top of that we have Bradley, Delph, Luke Young to come in, plus Warnock and Beye *spit*. Anyone I'm missing?

Very strong Utd line up, we need to be on our toes here or we could get steamrollered

Post by: ozzjim on February 01, 2011, 07:22:03 PM
As good as our side looks, and it does look the best it has for a long, long time, that United team looks a scary sight!

Imagine our side with Milner still though, we would have a really strong side and squad now. Ah well, have to buy him back in the summer!

Post by: Toronto Villa on February 01, 2011, 07:24:19 PM
I assume he's gone with Walker so we can attack them. No point sitting back. We may as well just go for it.

edit: plus Gabby had a slight injury from the weekend. if he can play, then a great asset to have late on when legs are tired.

We're gonna piss this tonight. Their keeper is past it and shit. Their defence is shit, midfield is shit and lightweight, Giggs is shit and past it, Rooney is shit and nothing these days, Berbatov will have an invisible game, because he's shit. And their manager is shit. So are their fans. Who are shit. Did I mention they are a shit eating shithouse of a shitty club?

Come on you Villa boys!!! 4-0 win all the way.

That is possibly the strongest Man United starting 11 I have ever seen.  Bollocks.

EDIT: And that's the strongest Villa bench in a long time.

I can see us getting spanked tonight with that team selection. Full backs will get torn apart and the midfield looks too weak. Tonight was Downing or Albrighton, not both.

Peter Schmeichel (c)

Dwight Yorke
Andy Cole

may be slightly stronger....

Not that I disagree with you mind you...

Maybe but they are top of the league for a reason.  They didn't go the season unbeaten though and this lot may well do.  I think their 1st 11 tonight is a very, very good one.

Oh and Jesper Blomqvist...???
Title: Re: Newton Heath v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Tom_Mc9? on February 01, 2011, 07:37:12 PM
I agree, he is good. In fact, all of them are good. However, if you look at the treble winners, this side is not nearly as good, in my opinion. I think the league has got a lot weaker which probably makes Man United's unbeaten start to the season look more impressive than it is.

Quite.  I think I saw Berbatov muscle him off the ball.  But that aside, he wants the ball, is not afraid of it and has an eye for a pass.  Hopefully he'll develop a more physical side to him, just to improve things, but then with a really good enforcer alongside (Bradley?) it may not be needed

I agree Barry has had good performance after good performance. He's like a spark plug in the middle, hustling and fighting for every ball.  Pair him with Makoun and we've got a solid creative middle.

NRC can go now, and keep Stan on as a backup..

Cueller in the middle with Collins is a better pairing. Dunne is looking more and more over the hill..

Makoun does look good but I hope there is a little more to his game.  So far he has been finding space, getting the ball and passing it 10 yards after 1 or 2 touches.  Can he hold the ball, drive forward and play a defence splitting pass?

Exactly what Sir Graham is saying on R5...

I am sure there is more to his game, maybe that is his instructions... make space get the ball, give it to Ash / Marc and Downing to create.

Bannan for Stan asap

I agree Barry has had good performance after good performance. He's like a spark plug in the middle, hustling and fighting for every ball.  Pair him with Makoun and we've got a solid creative middle.

NRC can go now, and keep Stan on as a backup..

Cueller in the middle with Collins is a better pairing. Dunne is looking more and more over the hill..

Yep

Man United have only conceded 7 goals at home this season, so we're in plentiful company there.

The response to going down after less than a minute has been heartening, we've passed the ball around very nicely for long spells, and had most of the possession.

Man United are a much better side than us. In fact, they're a much better side than the rest of the league, too, so we were always going to be well up against it here, but if we're going to lose, I'd rather we did it having not lost our bottle, gone to pieces and let that early goal get to us.

All the signs are that that will not be the case.

To be fair, it's not been that sort of game.  We've had more possession than them, and they've not passed it round us in the middle which would need someone running round sticking their foot in.

We're actually knocking it around quite well, though I suspect that's only because ManUre want us to.  The early goal means they've sat back a bit more than I thought they would.

Frustrating; general play wise, the best showing at Old Trafford for some time. Dunne and Collins were very rash and shaky though - thus we are two down. Its the same sloppiness that lost us game after game in the first half of the season.
The positive is that Makoun is transforming the way we use the ball in midfield. Precise, quick passing. Its good.

BUY SOME FUCKIN DEFENDERS HOULLIER!!!!

Sorry but whilst we have been quite positive in the transfer window, why, WHY have we left the awful defence barely untouched.  We have conceded more goals than almost any other team this season and yet GH didn't bring in a centre back.  Frustrated isn't the word.  Our defence is shit.

That about sums it up.

I don't really blame Collins for the second.  He has been pretty tight other than that, it was a brilliant cross.
Title: Re: Newton Heath v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: brontebilly on February 01, 2011, 08:53:36 PM
Not sure how you can blame Collins for the second. The cross was superb. Clark's slip gave him a bit of time and his cross made the goal. Awful by Dunne for the first.

Think all our attacking players have been dire. Bent up front has been shocking. Young lost in the hole. Both widemen dire and not supporting their full backs defensively either.

Only positive is Makoun who has been decent.

Id bring Albrighton and Petrov off for Reo Coker and Gabby at the break.

Downing - has all the same drawbacks that George Boateng had with none of the advantages. Please remove, now. Replace with Delfouneso, Return the poser to left wing and MA to the right win 3-2. It's easy this football management lark.

Makoun is the only positive so far.  The rest struggle to control the ball at times.  All their players have an amazing first touch which I'd expext anyone being paid £20000+ to be able to do as standard.

Think Albrighton should come off, with Young reverting back on the wing - with Heskey upfront to give us a bit more ooomph and hold the bleedin ball up on the edge of the area.   One thing is for sure - Houllier will make some changes unlike MON would have just left it until were are 3 down with 3 minutes to play.

Lets get thru the next 45 and pull a couple back - just like they did at VP.

Different manager but the same poor team selection for the opposition at hand.
GH:   A few basics:
•   Don’t play 3 wide players in a team like ManU at OT
•   Stan isn’t up to a game like this
•   This team (as per my pre match thread) would have been better equipped:
              Friedel,
Walker, Collins, Dunne, Carlos
                 Clark
Albrighton Bannan Makoun Young
                  Bent
Let’s see what he does at HT?

Haven't managed to see most of the game, but saw the goals and they both came from slack defending. Nicely finished by Rooney yes, but he should never have had the chance to get the shots away in the first place, poor marking by both Dunne and Collins.

This is a load of fucking rubbish.

You'll be rolling out the "Bring back MON" banners next, Riss.

Can you not at least see what we're trying to do? Play football?

Some of our possession and passing has been excellent. We're lacking the final ball, but we're knocking it around nicely. I've even noticed some movement off the ball.

Agree Paulie, we are playing some decent stuff.

Is he still playing Downing and Albrighton on the wrong wings? As much as Young in the hole is not working, the best games for our wingers are when they play there natural sides. Downing and Albrighton have both got goals getting on the crosses of the other winger. When they have to check back to get it on their stronger foot we lose the impetus.

Can we just not bother playing this lot again? just give them the 6 points and have 2 extra days rest?
why not.  Felt like a defeat!

Does that mean we have to give back the 1 point we got this season?

God Downing is so utterly useless at times.
Can't tackle, can't cross. Makes one assist every now and then but contributes next to nothing for the other 89 minutes.

Just hope Bradley comes in and cements his place next to Makoun, so we can leave Petrov well alone!

Even though they combined for the Bent goal, I do not see Young and Downing as part of the future. With Bradley Bannan, Albrighton, Delph, Gardner, Forrester and Carruthers in the "waiting room" I think we should cash in now (i.e. July). We could do with some leadership from them, rather than their ambivalence and complacency.
Interesting game tonight: composure but little threat.

Dunne and Collins: only one excellent game in the season (Man. City home), and they earn their huge wages since August. . .
