I'd tick with same team, just swap Ireland for Carew.

We will definitely win this one.

I think it'll go to penalties. No idea who from there. Our penalties haven't been great since fat Barry left.

I do quite like the look of Legion's team. It's time Fonz was given another start.

We can beat them and i've a sneaky feeling we will.

I agree Clampy, thing is our habit of being shyte in the first half appears to have returned. Having said that they will have to come at us as they are at home and that will suit our counter attack stylr of play. Narrow 1-0 win for me with Gabby netting.

I never thought I'd say it but Habib Beye has to play and Luke Young switched across.
I'd leave Bannan out also. Leave him to come on as an impact sub.

Curtis Davies should be brought back also. More penny pinching by the board perhaps how he hasn't been brought back already?

We need for Ashley Young to target Ridgewell and get Downing back on the left. Our only saving grace is that they are pretty shit too. Will go to penos I'd say.

I thought Warnock was easily better than L Young yesterday.

There wasn't much in it between the two of them. But Warnock has been consistently shit for about a year. The time he laid down for an age near the end playing Arsenal onside was vomit inducing. It happens in every game so I've come to the conclusion that he is a wimp.

Hopefully the game is put back a week.

Post by: Matt Collins on November 28, 2010, 03:00:07 PM
Don't feel at all optimistic. Gabby would make a big difference, but would play Fonz ahead of Carew:

Friedel - Young, Collins, Dunne, Warnock - Ireland, Clark, Bannan, Downing - Young - Gabby or Fonz

I'd play Ireland on the right - in the absence of any other options -  and put Ash in the central role where he's been much better this season.

This isn't their Cup Final, it's even bigger, it's their World Cup Final... loads of pressure from their fans on their players to perform, if things aren't going well for them the noses will boo and moan then Gabby will turn up with another deft header in the 87th minute. But plz don't play Carew or Pires.

The referee for the game is Chris Foy (Merseyside)

He hasn't refereed this particular game before, and will be his second Carling Cup game involving us this season (the other being Blackburn)

He will be assisted by Darren Cann (chequered flag) and Bob Pollock (yellow flag), while Howard Webb will be controlling the benches.

Pathetic. Look at the teams man for man. Even with our Youth team. Forget the rivalry - the players do - and now see how we have been playing when we have the outlet of a fast front two(one). We will win this one.

We are simply better than them.

Forget it is the  knuckledraggers, see it from the coaches viewpoint.  Poor opposition. Poor results.

They are scared shitless of a Villa playing as we did against Man Ure for example. They cannot compete with our pace. Last game they played on the defensive, filled the midfield.  They know this. Downing will have a lot of fun. Gabby back? More fun. I really think that whatever our current worries will will bury them.

3:0 Villa. Sorry Sheldon.

I really don't think we'll be mentally strong enough in this one, no idea what central midfield we'll see for this don't think it will be strong enough whatever is out there.

2-1 SHA after extra time and we'll have someone daftly sent off. Cue meltdown on here and everywhere.

Exactly. They wish there were us, but unfortunately for them they will never achieve 1/6 of what we've achieved. It's embarrassing to share the city with such a pathetic club with pathetic support.

I wish Paddy Power did odds on blose parking the bus which they always do when they play us. Come at us and we'll batter the 6-toed out-of-towners.

Hi Sheldon,

I appreciate your presence here. Brave on your part and some of your comments are tolerated.  As for, how can I put it,  ability to converse with us. Well done. :)  Can't be easy living in a cave.

Table? When did you jump on this sight to pull this one?  Now.  Oh, of course. Goal Average. Best Blues ever. Apparently .Villa playing Youth team. Villa not where they should be in transition. Villa still considered a top six side. Blues a candidate for relegation. But same points. Now why would that be the case?

I dunno. Nice to have you  here, really is.

Do you really want us to compare? Very silly. What, how many years? ok You choose. Yawn.

Stay on this thread. The feeling appears to be that we accept you. Noblesse oblige.

Oh, sorry no excuses.errrm Injuries.? Luckily best youth/ reserve squad in the Premiership . Arguably. Yours?

I can see a few of our younger lads up for it, especially knowing how close they are to playing in a game at Wembley instead of just a free ticket and a day out.

If we play at pace we will piss all over them.

I thought they forgot to turn it off....for about 3 months. I think it's something that's only supposed to be used sporadically and the dickhead's had it wicked up 24/7.

From memory, Villa got the nod for groundsman-of-the-year not long after. Even when it comes to keeping grass green they're in our shadow.

They will never have a better chance of beating us I accept, but I still belive even with our current injury crisis that player for player we are still better whatever side we put out. The edge they have is in experience only, other than that I wouldn't take any player off them for one of ours.

Even our current crop of kids have thrashed blose while going through ranks. Its what happens in this town. Talent will out in the end.

I don't like the idea of Hogg playing to be honest, the intimidating atmosphere would get to him, and besides he seems to go missing during the first 45 mins of games, and we can't afford that.

The key for me is that we have to start stronger than we have the last 2 games. If we are ahead or level by half-time I fancy us to see it through BUT we have to staqrt well which is something the management team is not getting us to do. Would want us to go 4-4-2 aswell. Attack Attack!

Are you sure? After reading all the bed wetting on here, I'm half convinced that we're playing Real Madrid and not Small Heath "one shot per game" Alliance.

I know, they make Stoke look like Puskas-era Hungary.

The thing is, the plebs who watch them wont stand for them parking the bus against us, especially because they'll think we're there for the taking and it's their biggest game ever, so they'll have to come out of their penalty area once or twice and that will be their downfall.

Scared

Scared shitless?

Like they were at VP 4 weeks ago?

I can see a defeat purely because our back 4 looks so shit. 3 of the 5 need to go at the end of the season.

If gabby plays I can see us having some hope but without him fuck all

I know.... I just want Blues to acknowledge that the tie's in their favour, given our injuries. I get tired of all this 'a draw's a great result', 'we just want to stay up' shit. I want them to show a bit of ambition - they're at home with a near full strength side!

PS I haven't read any mention of Cuellar or NRC being available; Gabby's fit, apparently, and Ireland is 'ill' again. I really am starting to wonder about him now.

Gabby and Fonz instead of Pires and Carew for me please, otherwise same as Sat.  Might have had Ireland over Fonz if available to stiffen the midfield up, but the running of the front pair should help push us up the park and hopefully the young boys in the middle will play well like down at Fulham.

Yep. We've got to take the game to them, put them under pressure with a pacey front two (three, because we'll get Young in the game too) and stretch them at the back. We haven't got the personnel in the side, or the form in defence, to play a patient, soak it up, type of approach.

If the noses sit back and try and defend against us aka parking the bus which they do all the time... I just know we'll score another late winner. It'll get to 80 minutes we'll probably make a sub or two strengthening our attack, they'll just be content with defending more waiting till ET, we'll push them even further, their defence will start to crumble and we'll probably score from a set-piece or something.

Oh, I had a funny moment today coming into contact with a nose (I had my pocketsized anti-bacterial handwash ready before shaking his hand), he still wasn't that confident playing us despite us having 12 players injured. Tbf, I wouldn't be confident either I was a nose... they've only finished a massive 2 times ahead of us in the league in 20+ odd years. No doubt if they beat us (shudder) they'll completely disregard the fact of all our injuries and will start patheticially saying "stop making excuses".

Strong line-up? If/when we beat you I don't want to see any "We lost to Vile reserves" on SHA forum. Still, we played an even weaker team that completely outplayed United that no other team will do this season, just play like that again and it'll be another routine victory against small heath.

I make it nine players out, we're down to bare bones and the team picks itself. Even at this stage, judging by the pattern of the last few weeks, someone will drop out tomorrow or in the warm-up.

Any other team in the league, with home advantage, would be pretty confident.

I'm sure they were all printing out the league table at exactly 4:50pm and framing it, putting it on their mantlepieces. We'll have to forget though small heath have only finished above us twice in the league in 20+ odd years...

I wonder how many times in the Last 100 years they have been above is in May... Christ even excluding May they do badly.

Let them enjoy it. It's even less frequent than the passage of Haley's Comet. Something that will happen once in the average nose's lifetime.

On to more important and relevant matters: I'd quite like us to partner Gabs with The Fonz. See how their back four can cope with two pacy strikers.

Provided our defence can do what they used to be good at
there shouldn't be a problem -

However recent performances by Dunne & co would suggest
we aren't going to keep a clean sheet -

Heart says us but head gives it to them in normal time by
a single goal, please let me be wrong again

"Although keen to stress that supporters should not overstep the mark in tomorrow's potentially explosive fixture, he has urged the Birmingham fans to make Villa's players "nervous and apprehensive" to give his team every chance of progressing to the semi-finals."

What he really means is that he knows his team is shit so he has to try desperate things off the pitch, it is however amusing how he NEEDS to tell the noses to make some noise. I think the 600 odd Ajax fans that were at Villa Park a couple of seasons ago were more intimidating than the 23 thousand rabble which will be in the sty tommorow night. The sty is a hostile ground? Child Please.

The Mirror;

Police fear Birmingham derby can scupper World Cup bid

West Midlands Police will be out in force at tonight's Second City Carling Cup derby to prevent thugs ruining England's World Cup bid.

Birmingham's games with bitter rivals Aston Villa have been marred by violence since City were promoted in 2002.

The clubs meet this evening in the first night match since 2003 after their League clashes were moved to a lunchtime kick-off.

But since then a fan was also killed in April 2008 when run over outside Villa Park and there were seven arrests after the last derby in October.

Organisers of England's 2018 team fear the prospect of FIFA officials waking up to vote tomorrow after a night of violence in the Midlands.

Now around 500 cops are due at the game and misbehaving fans have been threatened with life bans.

Police superintendent Steve Graham, match day commander, said: "Local derbies always are policed accordingly.

"Anyone arrested for football related matters will also be subject of applications of football banning orders which will prevent them from attending future fixtures.

"We have worked with Birmingham City and Aston Villa to ensure that this event takes place in a trouble-free and safe environment.

"Thousands of avid supporters will attend the match to enjoy the spectacle and atmosphere of a local derby, however we acknowledge that there may be a minority who will seek to use the occasion as an excuse to cause trouble.

"My message to this minority is that there will be a high-visibility operation on the day and we will take a robust stance against anyone whose behaviour falls foul of the law."

I'm hoping for this:

                 Friedel

L Young Dunne Collins Warnock

A Young Clark Bannan Downing

            Delfouneso Gabby

Subs: Guzan, Lichaj, Lowry, Hogg, Pires, Carew, Herd

I'd like to drop Dunne for Cuellar, but he's not fit and our only other centre-back option is Clark, and he can't play there because we've no real other option to take his place in centre midfield. So for me, the first X1 just about picks itself. I'd like to see how solid Johnson, Dann and Ridgewell look with Fonz, Gabby and Ashley going at them - and in particular, I'd love to see Young lining up wide right to take on Ridgewell at every opportunity. The lad (Ridgewell) has got his qualities, but as we all know, he's also got his faults and I think most of them are exposed with him at left-back....

Really finding it difficult to get worked up about this. For once the roles seem to be reversed, there's very little pressure on us to get a result considering the state of injuries etc., so if we lose, it's no great disaster. For the blues, it's without doubt their best chance of winning against us in years. Can they handle that sort of pressure though?

It would be a disaster of biblical proportions if we don't beat those clowns, if we lose, we can't use injuries as an excuse, we are likely to be starting with 8 of our first choice team, it's the fact that anyone who has ever played in centre midfield is currently injured makes it worse.

I know what you mean, but I like then we'll end up being solid, and the game will drift into a stalemate. I think if we can take the game to them and test them defensively, that's the key: get the first goal and we'll control the game, they'll have to come forward, which doesn't suit them.

But Houllier hasn't tended to go with two out and out strikers often, so I wouldn't be surprised to see an extra midfielder in there.

Big John has been awful for so long but I would still start him tonight. He is a complex fellow but I think he knows tonight could be a big chance for him to get back in the fans good books and destroy the Blose defence.

I would play Gabby in the sort of role MON used to give him where he just played everywhere wing/striker/full back.

If we do play 5 in midfield, we need to get numbers forward supporting the lone striker a bit more than we have done recently.

Our circumstances haven't really changed much since we played them in the league when Gerard left the hand brake on for 75 minutes, I can't see tonight being much different.

As poor as our defence has been recently I would back all of them in a scrap against the noses tonight.

Problem is that he patently can't play as a lone striker, his complete and utter lack of mobility means that balls have to be absolutely pinpoint, otherwise we'll be gifting them possession (like on Saturday).

Definitely Fonz with Gabby, if Gabby was in hot form he may do ok on his own, but he's still finding his fitness so will benefit from the help up top, plus we only have Pires or Herd to fill in as the 5th man in midfield so no thanks.

Nervous. Exciting. Buzzing. Shitting it. Freezing but warm and fuzzy inside. Can't wait but also don't want the game to come.

Please Villa don't let us down, go out and fight, scrap, kick lumps out of them if we have to and win at all costs. I can't even comprehend standing there having to listen to them taking the piss, it's a horrible feeling and i hope we're 2 or 3 nil up so we can party properly.

I can do it for hours on end without mention or reference to tonight's game. In fact you can have those clowns at it without even mentioning the Villa. Put this on your phone to show them and watch the tears well up in their eyes...

I would give Warnock a go in midfield..he's played there before and will at least put himself about, he's not gonna be missed at full back, just as a temporary measure.
Midfield is where the key is going to be tonight and I don't think Bannan and Clark will know what's hit them.

Switch Clark and Warnock positionally maybe?  Warnock may cover more ground in the middle and Clark adds extra height to the defence?  He's composed enough and left footed so could do a job at left back imo.

Just want it out of the way ASAP.

Preferably a few early goals to put the peasants in their place and restore St Andrews to it's regular morgue like status.

It would be bad enough losing to the cants but losing to them and putting them through to a semi final would be a real sickner.
