I worry about our midfield getting over run. Who will play with Coker? 2-1 win as long as we take our chances.

I think we are fast running out of players......unless im missing some thing the midfield and forwards can only be

Young Coker Sidwell Downing

  Heskey Carew (if fit)

Gabby - injured, Marc - suspended, Fonz - out of favour

Interesting to see how we will play in this one with no Petrov or Albrighton. I predict:

Friedel - Beye, Collins, Dunne, Warnock - NRC, Sidwell - Downing, Ireland, Young - Heskey

I think I would rather play Young behind the forward, but I guess that means Delf on the right which would be a risk. But I'd be tempted.

I'd also like to play Cuellar instead of Dunne, but I suspect that won't happen either.

Can't see us scoring more than one tops, which is a worry. Good job we have  a great defensive record at VP

Ashley Young is going to humilate slow and shit Agent Ridgwell down the left, we win as usual, Heskey scores 2, Bowyer gets sent off, Stephen Carr is a wanker will be sung, Gardner misses an easy chance and small heathens will be in attendance just to be laughed at.

Us 10 - 0 Them

Us:  Ash & Stew
Them:  Gardner (3), Ridgewell (4) & Carr

Bowyer & Carr red-carded for trading punches.  The ugly one thinks the uglier one is Kieron Dyer.

Think this game will be won/lost in the midfield.
Would Ireland and Reo work well in the middle or likely to be over run?

Post by: eastie on October 28, 2010, 10:05:21 AM
Desperately short of midfield options and if ever sidwell or Ireland need to perform it's now- both were awful last night and blues will be up for it- we cannot afford to carry passengers on Sunday.

Very tough game and I think 1-0 will be a great result- we are struggling for goals and ravaged by injury- will be a very tight scrappy game but we can sneak it.

That's what I'm wondering. Over on the Villa-Burnley post match thread I've posted about pairing Ireland and NRC together from here on in, or at least until Petrov and Delph are fit or we strengthen in January.

But that said, given Albrighton's suspension for this game, it changes our options slightly and may be worth going with Ireland, NRC and Sidwell; I agree, I think midfield will be crucial. Blues are pretty strong in that area. Sidwell lacks finesse but he'll certainly be competitive.

We're a bit short with injuries and suspensions now biting but I'd go with this:

                           Friedel

Beye         Cuellar         Collins       Warnock

                NRC            Sidwell

         Young       Ireland      Downing

                         Heskey

Subs: Guzan, Dunne, Clark, Lichaj, Bannan, Carew, Delfouneso

                           Friedel

Beye         Cuellar         Collins       Warnock

                NRC            Sidwell

         Young       Ireland      Downing

                         Heskey

Thats the team I'd like to see.  I also think it WILL be the side, with the only real question being Cuellar or Dunne.

I'm nervous about this as always.  Law of averages would say that they're due a result after 6 beatings on the trot.  I've predicted a draw and am going for 1-1.

As I said on the Burnley thread, i'd like us to be brave and go 4-4-2

Friedel

Beye
Collins
Cuellar
Warnock

Young
Ireland/Sidwell
Reo Coker
Downing

Heskey
Carew

Assuming Carew is fit.

I'd go with that. Although, Sidwell really doesn't deserve a place in the team.
Injuries have obviously hit us hard and the suspension of Albrighton is gutting. I fear that Gardner, Bowyer and Barry Ferguson will be too tough for us in midfield and Reo-Coker will have a lot of work to do.

Well, the team picks itself given the shortage of players. Any sort of win will be a good win. We may have to settle for a draw as the game will be won and lost in the midfield and I'm not convinced with ours at the moment.

After having a slow start to his Villa career , I have a feeling Ireland will score and do him a would of good .

would be funny if Sidwell did score after being 99% useless in his Villa career...  It would be he is  shit but we still  love him at Villa then ;-)

can see one of these scoring in a tight 1-0 ...  or 1-1   ...     butterflies started already

1-0, Downing with a Heskey lay off. Oh, and a late red card for the prince of darkness love child Gardener, to great delight of all. It'll no doubt be a very poor game, it's no surprise that it's not been chosen for TV based on the two games last season.

We've lost a bit of mental toughness and self belief since O'Neill left - not surprising really. This is one game where that will make all the difference. We need to score the first goal.

I don’t think that is the case at all. The main issue with the side is goals, which isn’t helped with our biggest goal threat being out injured at the moment.

Its a question of whether we’ll take our chances on Sunday. Heskey and Downing are in great form, as is NRC. I’m hoping that with more games Ireland will get better, he shows flashes every now and again, but its clear that he’s not 100% at the moment.

As long as we put the chances we create away and I’m talking about gilt edged chances that we’ve missed against Chelsea, Sunderland and Burnley, then obviously we’ll be fine.

2-0 win Young with both.

I think Sidwell should start. Last night he did well with the combative style of things and for the first 30 minutes he got forward well and played some good passes through too. He seemed to shrink in confidence though, which was bizarre and he should have scored with that header.

I'd like to see Collins bought forward as a DM, think he has the temperament and distribution to play that role. Will give NRC the chance to push forward and support the front 4.
It's going to be a tight game, have a bad feeling in my stomach, but then again I always do, even the morning of the 5-1 mauling!

I wouldn't be surprised if GH plays Dunne to mark Zigic
his lack of pace should not be exposed by a lamp post

Sidwell will probably get another chance -we don't have much else in the way of options-Bannan may be judged by Gh to be too small for what promises to be a physical game

I hope Big john is fit although I expect 'Ivanhoe' to start upfront with a 5 man midfield Ash Ireland NRC Sidders Downing with Ash and ireland taking turns to link in with Emile
a nervy win for us i think(hope)

The last two home games against these lot I have been out the night before and got really pissed, then I have turned up with a terrible hangover feeling like shit, after the game in April I was sick walking back to the car.

Going out Saturday night, anyone think I should get on the double brandys and coke? Just wanted to warn anybody who sits in L4 that they might get the contents of my stomach over their back.

Im standing by the 3-0 win, goals will flow! Ivanhoe will score! Downings on fire and Ash will be well up for this i think. The players always seem to turn up for this and with our defensive form i think we've got a great chance. They had their best chance last year, and they did nothing. Cant believe the negativity of people on here. Were playing SHA not Barcelona!

I'm more nervous about this one than in recent years due to injuries.  I think last night showed how much we miss Petrov's calming influence in the middle and Gabby is such a great player in derbies.  So difficult to predict.

We certainly wouldn't want to lose anymore ground on the teams above us when playing a team of Blues standard at home, that said this game is all about passion and who takes their chances (please let this be the game that we start to take ours).  As somebody else said, the first goal will be important.

Head 0-0, heart 3-0.

My biggest worry is that this will mean more to some of their players than our own and that they are quite capable of just roughing us over - much as they used to try and do in the 70s and 80s, not without success on some occasions...

Think about it, Sidwell was awful against burnley, we physically have noone else to play in midfield, collins is the next best thing available.

And Delfouneso has played wide right before (against Blackburn) and at the moment I trust him more than Ireland.

I'm convinced that Sidwell will cost us if he plays!

Same team as jj av for me, although against Chelsea Downing played right side and Ash left, i think I'd prefer Ash on the right for this one to terrorise Ridgewell.  If Carew was in any sort of form I'd consider him over Sidwell or Ireland, but he's not. GH likes Ash off Heskey so there is a chance he could do this with Bannan left and Downing right, maybe if Banna had played better the other night this would have been more likely.  I'm sure Albrighton would have started if available.  We can't afford to carry two of our central midfielders so at least one of Ireland or Sidwell needs a really good game for us to win.  I think Ireland will and we'll sneak it 2-1, Ash with both, Ferguson for them.

I think we'll win 1-0.

Heskey to get an early goal and we'll just about hang on in there.

Friedel

Beye
Dunne
Cuellar
Warnock

Young
Sidwell
NRC
Ireland
Downing

Heskey

Young or Ireland to play wide right/behind striker and maybe swap roles during the game?

Im going for 1-1 if we didnt have so many injuries i would have gone for the win gutted Albrighton is out would have made a difference even if he didnt start.

I dont usually get that much involved in giving players stick but for that knob head Carr Ill make the exception. What is it with Blues signing players everyone hates? talking of Robbie savage noticed hes already started having a go at Dublin!

I think that's what he will do, he'll have to play his strongest line up bearing in mind the players we have out. I hope he gives Fonz a run out at some point. He could be our Gabby for the day.

Can't remember the last time I felt so pessimistic about playing SHA. Injuries and suspensions mean the team practically picks itself, with little or no prospect of anyone on the bench being able to come on and change things.  I think GH will play Sidwell and Ireland with NRC in midfield - and both need to step up their game after anonymous performances on Wednesday.  I've gone for a draw 2-2

As usual this is a game I dread.
Will be doing all my usual pre-match rituals with increased vigour, including getting the wife down to Villa Park, as she only sees one match a year, and has never seen us lose in a derby match.
Having said that, I am not at all confident and have an awful feeling they are going to turn us over this time.
The stick I will get come Monday will be unbearable, I doubt the players really ever know just how much it means to win this one, there is a bloke at my gym who still walks around bragging about how they beat us twice in one season in 2003, and most of them are like that.
I'd take a draw at this stage, but pray god we can get the win, anyway and anyhow !
Come on the Villa boys, don't let us down !

This looks very good for me. Collins over Sidwell in midfield would be a much better solution. Is L.Young fit though? Also, I think I'd have Clark over Dunne and let him score an overhead kick a la Cahill. (Does anyone remember the sloppy pass-back from Dunne that almost let Larrsson in last season? I fear that happening again if Dunne plays or something similar anyway).

Because Sidwell is possibly the worst player ever to have pulled on a Villa shirt and I think Bannan might be a little too lightweight at the moment.

We are talking about Collins in midfield because Sidwell has proved he isn't upto it and Bannon proved he is too lightweight.

Yes Warnock would be good but there is no cover for him.
With Collins in midfield we will be very strong defending and be stronger in attack.

I just pray that Houllier is thinking the same about Sidders, you never know subbing him for Collins against burnley might have been (although I think that was to close the game out)

True, just hope Gardner has a nightmare this weekend and Sidwell has a stormer. Think he owes us one after his last few performances. Think he'll start, definitely don't think Collins will play midfield, somewhere he has hardly ever played in a feisty derby. Need him at the back to cover up for any of Dunnes slip-ups.

Warnock could have been another midfield option as he played there for a year at Blackburn but we've got no cover left back so that's out of the window. Sidwell has to play, whether in a 4-5-1 or 4-4-2, because Houllier won't under any circumstances play two strikers and Young and Ireland. It'll be low scoring and very tight, could go either way, unfortunately.

Certainly, the referee is generally poor but gets the big decison right sending Gardner off for bringing down Young in the box and getting a second yellow.  6/10.
There will be scattered showers, a high of 10 celsius, and light variable south westerly winds (resulting in a vague smell emanating from the north stand/witton lane corner).

I haven't lived in Birmingham for 10 years. Nobody at work can even name any Blues players (in fact to them Blues are Chelsea) let alone supports them. The Fulham game next week means more to me. The local media in W Mids will big up the game but in reality the rest of the country ignores it. Sky for instance have chosen to show the Georgdies vs Makkams. The league this season is a write off - I'd rather win the cup game.

Haha, I should have known that wouldn't be far away. The kids special and he turns up in these games. I'm not making any predictions on the score or the scorers, but he's gonna win it for us.

I cant see anything but another all too easy Villa victory. My son and i will be in the Doug Ellis lower and i hope to hear the sound of Salsa Party Animals footsteps tripping the light fantastic in the Doug Ellis upper with an impromtu display of dance inbetween Villa goals.

Cup match has nothing to do with this. We'll beat them today.

Would be pleasantly surprised if we won. They are a more settled side at the moment and I'm really worried about our midfield being completely out-muscled.

1-1.

Now it's so close i'm getting a bit nervous. Bus times into town checked about 7 times so far. And joy of joys, i've woken up with toothache and look like a hamster as my cheek is swollen and i've got backache as well, getting old sucks!

We've played some decent football in the last 3 league games but only got one point and one goal. Today is the day it either finally clicks under Houllier and we'll walk it 3 nil or the injuries in midfield and Dunne's form will cost us

Great working in a bunker with Skysports only!
On the flip-side....
Aston Villa F.C. 2 - 1 Small Heath

Ireland 11', Dunne 61'
Agent Gardner 68'

Join the club.
I'm confident, but still nervy.
I've just had 3 sausages, 3 rashers of bacon, 3 eggs, fried bread, tomatoes and beans, so i'm hoping that will settle my stomach.

Don't see us being outmuscled by the plebs but do see us sinking our own boat with countless missed opportunities so the draw wouldn't surprise me.

Whisper it quietly, but with the players we have missing I might even accept it, just to get the game out of the way.

If I was in the B-lose camp I'd be looking at this as as good an opportunity as they've had in recent years to beat us.

That said, I reckon we'll win.

1-0 Villa

I can never eat before a game like this, but by the time I get to the ground i'm starving. Any chance you can bring some sausages?

No, didn't get any black pudding and forgot about the mushrooms.
Seems to have worked though, I feel a lot better.

Is it just me or has Ashley been building up to a sending off recently.
Hope it's not today. He has become the type of player I dislike in other sides.
