Friedel; Young, Dunne, Collins, Warnock; Albrighton, Reo-Coker, Petrov, Downing; Young, Heskey. Subs: Sidwell, Ireland, Carew, Clark, Guzan, Cuellar, Bannan.

Dunne in for Cuellar. Very strange decision.

I suppose Dunne's reading of the game might be better, and against Spurs that might mean more than Cuellar's physical and aerial dominance. That's all I can think of, anyway.

I think physical and aerial ability is what we need today, especially with Crouch and Pavlychenko playing. We'll have to see. Very harsh on Cuellar though.

Gomes; Hutton, Bassong, Huddlestone, Assou-Ekotto; van der Vaart, Jenas, Modric, Bale; Crouch, Pav. Subs: Cudicini, Corluka, Kranjcar, Lennon, Palacios, Sandro, Keane.

It's a very attacking spurs team isn't it? I can see us coming under some pressure. I would have thought this was a game to play three in central midfield, and who knows, Downing may play there. They are lkely to be susceptible at the back, but will we take enough of our chances and will we be able to withstand what I think will be a huge amount of pressure at times?

Would take a draw, no question

I'm thinking that Spurs are not one of those teams we can afford to give the ball back to through bad passes or clearances. Maybe Dunne just edged it there. In this new era maybe we'll see more horses for courses type selections. We also need to see the squad rotated so factor that in too. Dunne's a quality footballer, so I'm not overly concerned. I just want to see the team transition more and more every game into a possession first outfit. This will be a solid test.

I thought we might of pushed ash back onto wing and brought in ireland today for either albrighton or downing, giving us three in midfield with ireland pulling the strings, can see us needing to try and contol midfield and build from there

I'm not at all convinced by Spurs' formation. Their 4-4-2 has two very advanced and often immobile strikers, so with our two holding players we may be able to isolate them. They will cut in from the flanks, though, to try and control the centre of the field, so there may be an opportunity for us to counter-attack with the full-backs.
Title: Re: Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: KRS on October 02, 2010, 02:42:13 PM
They have to go attacking because their defence is so bad, but I'd like to think our defence can handle Crouch and Pav.

Bassong and Huddlestone as their central defenders?
Jenas and Modric as their central midfield?

Both teams have lightweight midfield but this game is there for the taking if our forwards are on form with their make shift defence.

Uh oh.  Dunne has looked overweight and poor this season.  Cuellar came in and looked very good, so dropping him seems very harsh.  It's not like Dunne was in good form before his injury.  He'd better have a good game today.

It's a shame that Gabby's injured. Huddlestone will be very important for them in possession, he'll step out from the back as their midfield is so forward thinking. If Gabby were playing he could have really pressed him and made life difficult. Having said that, it's Heskey playing not big John, so we could sit Emile on top of Huddlestone, who isn't the quickest himself, and have the same effect.

Cuellar won't be amused by his omission, after playing a blinder at Wolves.
Dunne was awful, prior to his injury.
Title: Re: Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: supertom on October 02, 2010, 02:49:15 PM
That's a worrying decision. It's an O Neill decision. Carlos was man of the match last week. We looked so much the better for having him alongside Collins than Dunne. Dunnes been poor this season and certainly coming back from an injury so soon, on top of carrying his timber, means he's not gonna be fully fit.

All I can sense is that Houllier wants a commanding leader in the backline to keep Warnock and Young in check, but still, I'd have dropped Collins before Cueller. But in all honesty Dunney should be the one warming the bench.

From early signs I figured GH had more sense than that. Still, win today and there's nothing to complain about. If Dunney fouls up, on Houlliers head be it. I don't buy the aerial presence thing, because Cueller is more than capable in that department.

A bit harsh on Dunne there. He was fantastic for us last season. I think Cuellar deserved to keep his place in the team, though.

Richard Dunne must make more mistakes than any other player. As a player in defence, it proves costly. You can see why Man City weren't bothered about him going.

I've said it before (after the Carling Cup Final), and got hammered for it, but Dunne is the David James of defenders. Very, very good, but you're just waiting for him to to fuck it up.

Missing Emile up front. Carew needs to get moving. Or we need to slip Ash out wide and drop Downing or Albrighton to the stands, and get...oh fuck...Sidwell on. Once Petrov's legs go in 10 minutes, Spurs will stampede all over us, especially if the ball doesn't stick up front.

My friend who is a Spurs fan has just sent her opinion of the game...
"Glad Heskey has goine off. Brad seems to want an hour to take a kit. Your best player is Downing."
Interesting points. She also claimed that we were "as dirty as Wolves."

I have disagreed with all of her points apart from them being glad Heskey has gone off.

Guess the GH evolution will take more than a year

We have a lot to work with and have the potential to progress. But we are playing catch up to the likes of Spurs.

I seriously doubt Carew will last that long...

Carew gives us nothing these days. Definitely time to move him on.

We're always going to struggle when we have a spine of:

Overweight Dunne
Over the hill Petrov
Overated Carew.

Houllier better know how to buy players in January. It comes to something when we're licking our wounds about the loss of Heskey due to injury.

Carew needs to go.
Sadly but definitely.

If Heskey had stayed on then I honestly believe we'd have got something from this.

A fit Gabby coming on for Heskey would have been such a different matter.

NRC has been brilliant I think. Let's not get too down about this. We know Spurs are a better team than us, with a brilliant home record. I think we've looked very dangerous for spells today, and we've played some good stuff.

Definite improvements to be made, but Delph, Gabby coming back will give us new options. And Albrighton will only get better.

We're now in a position where we're a goal down, the clock is ticking, and we're wastefully looping balls up in the air. Sorry, it's not good enough. It's fucking pathetic.

I can't say as we deserved anything more from the game.

We have talent. But we require work.

Amazingly lucky that heskey's been in the form he has so far this year - otherwise we'd be fucked up front.

Our attack really needs to be FISHY:

Fab/Fonz
Ireland
Stewie
Heskey
Young (A)

Carew has been carp and needs filleting off. His performance sticks in yer throat.

Yes, and looked bright when he came on. Needs more than 10 fucking minutes though.

Oh how we missed Emile. Shocking to see myself type that!

Lots of work needs doing in January. Our central midfield is poor. Neither the class to retain the ball, nor enough grit to play 90 minutes of aggressive pressing. Cheers Martin.

Carew looks lost. Too many of our players look fat.

Indeed. Looking back on it I think that was MON's biggest crime. If he'd bought another decent striker instead of say davies or delph, even one on their last contract, you wonder what might have been.

Dont wanna harp on about Carew. But he was clueless. Even just holding the ball up would of changed things. Cuellar has got to be asking why he has been dropped....

I'm very demoralized in seeing how the old firm Collins & Dunne let Crouch do what he wanted in the air. Definitely crap, thank you again Mr O'Neill for bringing players like these overpaying them. And Carew is not anymore at the level required by the Premier League. I'd like to see a bit of fresh air: Clarke and Cuellar in defence, Bannan in the midfield, and let's hope that Heskey and Gabby can ricover soon from their injuries.
