The Rat Pan
« on: March 10, 2011, 08:22:10 AM »
The Rat Pan or Upper Grounds appears to be in the process of refurbishment. I don't know if it going to be a pub again but they have put a new roof on and done quite a bit of gutting out over the last few weeks. It was never one of my usual haunts but it would be nice to see it back in action again.

Yes have seen this.  I reckon it will be converted into flats.  Shame if the pub is lost but doubt it is viable.

Dirty dump. My dad did releif work there in the late 70s/early 80s. One night a bloke with agun came down and sat in the corner - just for protection for my dad should anything happen! My dad kicked him out but stayed on in the pub. Still wonder why.

I used to pop in there for a pre match tipple. One night a few years back I went in for a pint before a reserve match and it looked like I gatecrashed a wrap party for Shameless and My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.

Used to use it throughout the 90s - usually upstairs 'lounge' for us.

There always used to be one group of guys who ordered 7 pints of Guinness for each round and  took the pints off the bar as they were being poured, slowly.
The staff always used to lose count so they inevitably ended up with 2 or 3 free pints per round :)

It finally became so much of a tip that we stopped drinking in there.

We used to use it in the 90's, back lounge mainly. I remember being devastated when we turned up for the first home game one year and found the place boarded up!
