I don't know about anyone else, but I always observe the two minutes silence and use it to think about any poor sod who has been sent off to war and never came back. It's not about pride in anything, it's an act of humanity towards everyday people who had to go through something terrible.

I don't restrict my thoughts to those who were English or British or whatever, but to all the poor bastards.

The people who try to adopt it for their own ends or see it as some big ugly pro-England thing that needs to be scrapped are completely missing the point.

Not really. Since the very beginning the question of whether or not it means 'remember the dead' or 'honour the fallen' (shall we say) has been a live one.

Right.  Who cares?  It's Remembrance Sunday.  I don't need to spend any time thinking about the semantics of whether I'm remembering or honouring those who have died in war.

I find the use of remeberance imagery extraordinarily offensive, from white vans to trainers and "poppy Christmas" displays to football flags.

Fair enough. Must be hell for you walking round in a state of being offended when you’re second guessing their reason for wearing it, especially as not everyone conforms to a stereotype.

I never said that, it's the misuse of the poppy and related imagery that I find distasteful. Reduced to a fashion statement or displayed on a football flag is not in keeping with the intention of remembrance and reflection that it was originally adopted for.

For some people, but for the vast majority it is a way of paying respects and also giving money to those that have been adversely affected by serving in the military.
I will continue to buy a poppy every year and I couldn’t give a fuck if some take offence because I believe it is the right thing to do.
