With the VAR, I think the ref's onfield decision was that the ball was played on by the defender only so it wasn't offside, hence not a definitive decision and why VAR then had to send him to the screen to change it rather then call it definitively.

Too much technology in the game. Go back to proper chalk lines, Thunderer whistles, square section goalposts and proper lace-up footballs and boots.
