That's all rather sad. I recall his reputation for liking a drink, but that record of appearances and goals for Bradford is very impressive.

Vic Crowe gave him his debut.

He got into Ron's team the following autumn and was in the side that memorably beat the team that should have won the first division 3-0, on their own pitch, Everton, in a League cup-tie. Useful result, as we went on to win the trophy.

He might have had a good run after this, but had his leg sliced open early on in a three-nil win against Millwall and had to recover from that.

As Dave says, he got a few games in December but once the Graydon-Leonard-Little partnership was formed, the game was up.

Wasn’t he driving the Triumph 2000 car with Andy Gray as passenger that flipped over on Short Heath Road one Sunday afternoon in 1974? It was big news at the time given that Gray was a new signing. I think the story made the main news.

Didn’t Andy Gray sign in the autumn of 1975?

Indeed. Jlloyd Samuel died in a Triumph 2000 but that was in 2018.

A really interesting article.
The player may have been a "nearly was" at Aston Villa but he had "Certainly was" status at Bradford City.
In the Bantams excellent fanzine "The City Gent" the player had mythical status and they even brought out (retrospectively) Bobby Campgell T Shirts.
As an aside the City Gent mag had a very impressive review / guide to Bradford Curry houses.

The City Gent was one of the best fanzines (but a long way behind H&V). I used to buy them at Sportspages shop in Manchester and used it to find decent boozers for a pre-mstch pint whenever we played Bradford City l.

The people who ran City Gent were known for being a bit arsey whenever fanzine people got together.
