Can't speak for others, but in my case it was because my dad chose to support Villa, when we were in the Second Division and they were in the First. I think maybe because we had Bruce Rioch.

Nothing to do with us being the most successful club in England up until that time. Honest.

Living here probably plays a part.

Living in Birmingham or the surrounding areas plays a part in people choosing Villa over Blues? Interesting theory.

More so than choosing a club 300 miles away.

There’s a Birmingham club 300 miles away? From Birmingham?

I support a peoples’ right to self-determination, and have sympathy with oppressed minorities. Further discussion on those topics would probably be better suited to off-topic.

That doesn't ring true, if you really stood with minorities oppressed by their more powerful neighbours and who have suffered centuries of misfortune, you'd be a Blues fan.

Indeed especially given Villa’s origins and everything the Club stands for!

Mrs Merton: What is it about the Midlands MOST SUCCESSFUL club that makes it the best supported?

I said a club, not a Birmingham or local club.

BV was asking about Blues fans, so I was referring to them and Villa when I posted this:

“It is a mystery though, why Villa has so many more fans in Birmingham and the surrounding areas, even amongst relatively-recently arrived Scots. I wonder what it could be?”

And as I said, making this your home makes more sense as they may have been living closer to VP, may have friends start taking them, which is more likely to happen than someone taking a new arrival to the sty as there's more of us already in Brum than them so they're more likely to meet us. I'm sure for those same reasons some new arrivals will now be sha fans.

Put it this way Perce, a young bloke from the Highlands move next door to you and introduces himself and asks about local football. Odds are the first thing you'll be doing is bigging up Villa and trying to get him to a match. Newcomers will experience more Percys than Blosers as there's a lot more Percys in Brum and the surrounding areas.

Of course. And as I said earlier in the thread, my support for the Villa is handed down through generations. I’m just wondering why there are more of us than them?

You can't really compare the very early days of football when fanbases were being formed with randomly choosing clubs hundreds of miles away a century later.

I just don't get being passionate another football club there's no natural connection to. There's 3 teams for me. Villa through family, Bromsgrove through location in my teens, England through nation. I can't imagine giving a shit about a random other side no matter how much they align with me politically or morally

Haha, that’s the H&V I know and love.

Certainly beats telling people what they REALLY think when they say something else.
