In accordance with Law 3 of the Laws of the Game, which states "that a match should not continue if there are fewer than seven players in either team", referee Wolstenholme abandoned the game with Albion leading 3–0, marking the first time a match in English professional football had ever been abandoned through the implementation of this law in the history of English football.
