The issue as I see it is that applause is the new way, people are in the groove and just go with it. I think it started with a George Best tribute, and is the new way of doing things. People like it because it's a positive way of celebrating a life.Trying to stop people showing their appreciation in that way is really hard. Putting the message out, to everyone, that it's a minute's silence is really hard to do, and it only takes one person starting to clap before the whole ground does it.Remembrance Day is a completely different tone, we're remembering millions of people who died in war and a round of applause just isn't ever going to be appropriate.
