I'm a Brummie, villa mad, and 58.

I've never been star-struck, though I'v been lucky enough to meet a fair few famous people.

Admiration of character and appreciation of ability, yes, but for the most part I've very few idols.

But I love Sid, Paul McGrath, and unquestionably, I loved Gary Shaw. The news has really knocked me back.

Rest easy Bab.

Awful news, RIP Gary. Anderlecht home was my first game, and the penalty areas were mud and sand, but his touch was sublime despite that. What a talent, what a guy

RIP Gary.  Everything has been said about what an exciting player and Villa hero he was.
I met him once, a few of us entered a quiz team in some tournament or other held in the Aston Tavern, we played against a team of some of the younger Villa players, including Gary. The lasting impression of him was of a Villa fan who happened to be a marvellous footballer so spent his time on the pitch rather than the terraces.
 Condolences to his family

By Steve Withe, son of Peter -

RIP Gary Shaw 🙏😢 The crazy world of social media and it's now been officially announced. I spoke to my Mum and Dad over Facetime and told them the news and we all cried and I've not seen my Dad like that since we lost our Grandad. God bless all Gary's family and friends 🙏

Official now and none the more palatable for that. Whoever thought back in the championship and Euro cup times singing his name on the Holte and openly envying the good looking talented bugger we'd be hearing this.
The memories are there forever and ever.
Thank you Gary.

such a sad day today .  Welling up here .  I saw his that game at Bristol city with my grandad when he made his debut and fell in love with him , he made my Villa love even stronger and covered my walls and I thank him for all the pleasure he gave me and my family. Proper villa legend and thanks for that day I had in Rotterdam with my dad and grandad , never to be forgotten .   This is just awful.

Never posted before although I do read most things on here. Felt compelled to post on such a sad day.
Gary was a wonderful player but also a genuinely nice bloke. I got to know him in the mid 90s when he attended the same gym I used to go to. At the time I was a bit down on my luck as I'd not long been made redundant. Gary knew this and invited me to attend the Villa v Leicester game ( early 1995 ? ) He knew money was tight but said don't worry about paying I'll get us into a box and we'll have a few free beers.
He was as good as his word. In fact, we had so many free beers in various boxes I didn't realise the game had finished 4-4 until the next morning !!
He also arranged for a club employee to give me a lift home. To this day I don't know who that was. What a wonderful gesture from a wonderful bloke. I don't need to say anything about his footballing abilities as those of us who saw him play saw those skills for themselves. Suffice to say he was unlucky to be around when England seemed to have a number of very good strikers.
He's been taken far too early. Thanks Gary for those wonderful football memories and for showing me a kindness when times were a bit tight. RIP HEITS.
