Catamaran racing in San Francisco
« on: July 18, 2024, 12:40:00 AM »
I’m watching this international catamaran competition and it’s very exciting. The boats move so quickly and every now and then, a crew misjudges the wind and the whole thing tilts at an impossible angle until they get the side stuck in the air back in the water again.

It’s a superb sport, full of outrageous moves and sudden changes in fortune for the teams involved. I’d love to have a go!

Result:

Spain (not them again)
Australia
New Zealand
GB!
Everyone else  :)

I quite like watching this as well.

I'm not sure what the regs are this year regarding that 'cranking' they have to do. There used to be a split between some teams doing hand cranking and some teams employing cyclists

Here you go Lou.....

The grinders/crankers/cyclors are the people who provide the power for the boat (eg to lower and raise the fins)

I believe they have their own app too. Might be worth installing to learn more.

grinders/crankers/cyclors

Those all sound like derogatory words people who live in Cornwall or Devon use to refer to the city dwellers who pile down there for their holidays.

Like "grockle". I was about to say "muggle" but I think that's something to do with childrens' books.
