A penalty and a yellow would probably have been sufficient there. It's likely killed the game off.

I understand that's the rule, but you probably wouldn't get sent off for pulling the attacker's shirt or arm.

No but hair seems to count as serious foul play. I suppose anything head or neck area is a risk.
