This kid seemed to have enormous hands from the picture. Useful for a Keeper I guess.

Do you mean like those big Kenny Everett ones? They would definatley come in useful.

Does this mean Unai's lad, Lander (?), is pushed down the pecking-order? The Emerys should claim nepotism rights.

It was probably picked-up earlier in this thread, but I hadn’t realised that Geertruida had gone to Leipzig until seeing him amongst their substitutes this evening. Transfermarkt says the fee was €18m which seems much more reasonable for someone in the last year of their contract than what was being quoted when we were interested. I presume that rules him out for us next year as well, and we’ll be looking elsewhere for a right-sided defender.

That was  the most guttering one for me as he would be very handy about now. Rb is the most problematic area we have had the last 12 months

I wonder if he’s just in the squad as a mole, spotting any youth players that are not being demanding of themselves, respecting the process, and objective to learn.

I predict we buy Tyler Dibling from Southampton when they go down.  Looks a right menace and would suit the Bailey RW position perfectly.

Sorry if this has been posted before as it's apparently about a month old.  We are 15th in the top 20 'worlds most valuable squads' list.  The usual suspects are higher, and Brighton are 17th which seems a bit mad.

I'd take those figures with a pretty big pinch of salt though given just it's someone adding together all the (completely made-up) figures from Transfermarkt.

I don't see us biting at £20m for Morgan Rogers or £60m for Ollie. On the other hand, if someone offered us £1.5m for Hause, I'm pretty sure we'd be all over it.

Then to look at Spurs - Vicario £5m more "valuable" than Martinez? Kulusevki worth £50m? Pape Matar Sarr (?) worth £40m while Kamara is worth £25m? Cristian Romero worth nearly the same as Torres and Konsa put together?

Not for me, Clive.

Not for me, Clive.

You're right, it's arbitrary at best.

One of the amazing things (the list isn't short) about Emery is how he's improved pretty much every player - indeed, it's hard to think of a player who hasn't progressed in some way under Unai. You could maybe argue Diaby and Donk?   I'm not one to get excited about the money we get through player sales, but the modern game is what it is, and having a manager who improves the players is every bit as important as having a good / lucky scouting team.

It isn't entirely arbitrary, they do have methodology to how they come up with the values but it's a bit weird:

https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/market-value-definition/thread/forum/357/thread_id/3433

The reputation of interested clubs is the big one that skews things. Take Evan Ferguson, he got linked to Man Utd and Spurs last summer and then a hattrick agianst Newcastle was enough to see a guy with about 10 goals to his name suddenly valued at €65m and people buying into the idea that he was ready to take over the world, only for him to score twice in the next 30 odd games (exactly as you'd expect for most 18 year old kids).

On that point about Ferguson was reading yesterday about Aaron Connolly, who pissed his career up the wall from an identical position, but thankfully for him he's managed to get some help before worse happened.

Or Anthony Stokes....remember him? He's going to jail now after a promising career pissed and snorted away. Had loads of ability. Troy Parrott, highly rated at Spurs, hanging out around some right dodgy sorts, seems to be doing ok now with Alkamaar at least. Connolly obviously, Obafemi is another one with a career on the slide. These are all talented lads, not Robbie Keane level but all had the ability to play consistently at a high level.

Ferguson worries me, I'm always suspicious about young players who are gassed after less than 60mins. All kinds of excuses being given for him.

Their was the lad at the Baggies as well, can't remember his name but I think he ended up at somewhere like Stoke for a while. Lots of young players have a season or 2 of being really promising before they disappear.

To bring it back to valuations, getting it right on whether those players are the real deal and will really leap forward or a flash in the pan who disappears is pretty much the entire difference between 'doing a Brighton' and 'young and hungry'.

Ravel Morrison who started at Old Trafford. Has since had more clubs than Tiger Woods.
