A kid who did OK playing in the Championship until March, against a lad who scored and assisted 10 plus in his first season in a Champions League quality side side?

Is exactly the right answer….decent first season, time for him to kick on not eff off

That would be a massive downgrade. I would hope that Jaden, if he comes back at all, is coming back as a squad player with potential to improve to first team regular in the coming seasons. If Diaby were to leave I'd be wanting a megastar to arrive to replace him.

100% - I’m happy for Philogene to come and compete in the squad, but selling Diaby would be mental.

Exactly plus one in one out doesn’t improve the squad depth.

Barcelona have agreed a deal in principle for Athletic Bilbao's 21-year-old Spain forward Nico Williams

They will probably agree a record deal, then just not pay the installments.

Yeah, I'd want a proven replacement for Diaby too. Just feel if Saudis threw money at us/him and any fears about the new financial year's numbers were a worry, he'd be the one I wouldn't be too upset at leaving. Much more gutted about Luiz being sold.

Personally, I prefer Philogene to Diaby as he has demonstrated a lot of skill and aggression and his energy levels seem to be higher. He is a better defender to backtrack too. Diably often looks out of sorts-although that was true of Bailey too before Unai settled him.

I really like Philogene but come on, if Diaby had been playing in the Championship last season he'd have broken all goalscoring and assist records.

Look at how everyone has been fawning over lightweight pish like Somerville at Leeds, who did Jack all the previous season in the big boys league.

Diaby would've eaten the Championship and had room for dessert.

Yeah I’m not sure replacing an international class player with one who’s done well for Hull would be the brightest thing to do.

Not sure if Williams would get on in England.  He seems shy of the tackle and a little lacking in strength for me.  Cracking player but I feel Spain is the right place for him to ply his trade.

Philogene is interesting, it depends if he will get enough time in the team to continue his development.  The step up isn't necessarily that great a challenge if the coaching and mentality of the player is right.  Rodgers has thrived on playing against that higher level.

Villa have chosen to do this and the figure will be reduced by 30 per cent because of a sell-on clause that was also placed in the terms that took Philogene to Hull.

So we match the £18m fee but this clause then reduces it to £12.6m...clever.

Agreed. I don't know how anyone can watch his highlights from last season and think that £12.6m isn't a deal for a player of his quality that is able to play on the left. There will be no bedding-in period as he knows his way around BH. Should be an easy transition and good for all parties.

Well, either that or we buy him for £18m (actually £12.6m) from Hull and then sell him to Ipswich for £18m. Nice bit of 'fucking over' PSR.

Why does it mess with PSR?
We buy for £18m (amortise over life of contract)
Book £6m of revenue instantly
Sell for £18m to Ipswich, recognise £18m of cost and £18m of revenue. Upside £6m ie exactly the same as if Ipswich just buy him for £18m now and we book £6m of revenue.

I was thinking that if he's just sold straight to Ipswich we would get the value of the sell on clause (£5.4m), but if we bought him for £18m, and actually paid £12.6m (due to our 30% discount) this would then be amortised over the length of the contract so, say 4 year £3.15m/year and then we sell for £18m to Ipswich so get £18m straight away, only offsetting £3.15m a year thereafter over 4 years. So a bit better for us, but i'm probably talking bollocks as i'm neither an accountant or know much about the rules !

Regarding the player, honestly i know it's cool to have the whole Roy of the Rovers stuff, youth product come good etc but i'd have expected us to be buying a player like this back a couple of years ago, not now and where we are now. If he does come though, good luck to him.

I geddit but you could have said the same about Morgan Rogers 6 months ago and I'm sure he got the nod ahead of Diaby towards the end of the season in one or two games - or if he didn't, no one would have bat an eyelid had he done so.
Philogene was ridiculously above the average talent in the Ch'ship last season.

I'd be delighted to have both in our squad next season and hope that they push each other. Our left and right side would be sorted then from an attacking point of view.

Yeah afraid not how it works. You’d have to write off the whole cost of his transfer when you sell him so unless we think we could sell him for more than we buy him for, it’s not a PSR fudge per se. Only thing that is beneficial is he’s effectively free this year.
We’d bank £5m from the sell on clause
Cost in year is £3.6m (£18m over 5 year contract)
Wages of £40k per week is roughly £2m per year so he costs us ~£5.5m in year and makes us about the same in revenue.

I agree though, not particularly inspiring but maybe more opportunistic - I don’t really think we need a winger given we’ve got a a few options now.
