At least not yet. I suspect it'll be a year or two before we can raid other Premier League clubs with 'too good to turn down' type offers for their better players.

We did it two* summers ago with Danny Ings. Didn't work out obviously, but if you look at the early pages of the Ings thread pretty much everyone seemed to think that it was an impressive show of intent to just waltz in and take the best player from a club who at the time would have been by most as our rivals at the time.

I said a while ago on this thread that I reckon we'll make an Ings / Bent style "Villa? Signed him? Wow" signing from a Premier League club this summer. Not sure it's Onana, but I think we'll sign someone of that sort of profile.

*edit - three summers ago.

Is Onana good, then? I'm always worried about buying from Everton, they seem to get zillions of pounds for so-so players.

He was less than £30m wasn't he?  It wasn't particularly big money then, and it certainly isn't now.  That doesn't feel like a "too good to turn down" sort of price?  They basically spent the exact same amount of money on Livramento that summer.  I just think it was them trading players normally, rather than us forcing them into a sale with money they couldn't turn down.

Then again, maybe my perception of what constitutes "too good to turn down" is skewed by Jack's transfer.

Them and West Ham, for some reason.

He had a few games on the bench for Everton unsure whether that was his form or injury.

Seems to have a good reputation but I feel it’s more potential than actual performance so far.

I think it was a deal rising to £25m but I think he only had a year left on his contract so it was seen as generous. He also told them that he wanted to join us and wouldn't sign a new deal with Saints.

They would rather sell him than Braithwaite.

When you consider that when you buy players, the fees are amortised over 5 years in the books and with possibly £120-150m coming in from player sales, spending £150m would show  up as £30m each year for the next 5 years.

And with our revenue likely to be around £260m this year, £300m+ next year and with Heck's stated goal of being £400m within 3 years, then I can see how we could go and spend £50m on one player once we cross over into the new financial year (1st July).

Hi, first post but been reading and lurking for years and this forum has helped me deal with players leaving, awful managers and terrible results as well as learning random things when it goes way off topic. So, thanks all.

I was speaking to a few other fans and said this summer could see us operate really cleverly and improve whilst on paper it doesn’t look that exciting, getting a couple in to improve first 11 and losing a couple of players who have done well but wouldn’t be our biggest misses. Based on rumours and deals that look likely I was wondering if this would represent a decent summer.

Players Out:
Douglas Luiz  = £25 million (Plus Samuel Irling Jr) Juve
Jhon Duran = £20 million (Plus Ian Maatsen) Chelsea
Matty Cash + Diego Carlo = £15 million (plus Fikayo Tomori) AC Milan
Robin Olsen
Alberto Moreno
Leander Dendoncker
Kaine Kesler Hayden
Lucas Digne
So £60 Million in plus three players who would improve us and apart from Dougie no one I would really miss.

Players in:
Samuel Irling Jnr
Ian Maatsen
Fikayo Tomori
Kelechi Iheanacho Free
Ross Barkley £5 million
Alex Baena £50 million
Amadou Onana £50 million
Luiz Junior £10 million

So be a net spend of £55 million (minus anything we generate from other sales) would reduce wage bill and on paper have us looking stronger, especially with Mings and Emi back. It is nine players out and eight in four of which would strengthen first 11 straight away and the rest stronger squad players.

Obviously no right back so would be either Konsa playing there or seeing how Kosta Nedelijkovic gets on.

Apologies for long first post.
