At the beginning of last season, what would you have said was an acceptable return, relative to his price tag?

The main reason Diaby isn't seen as a success is nothing to do with him, but because our other two main attackers had what will probably end up being the best season of their careers.

Not sure I agree with that. I think the main reason he isn't seen as a success is that on the whole, he didn't play very well. His overall figures were just about OK, but even when he was involved in a goal, his all round play usually wasn't fantastic.

I hope he improves and has a much better second season, but I also wouldn't be totally against taking the money if a Saudi team waves a big bundle of cash at us.

I agree and am also pretty comfortable with him possibly moving on.

Not every player is going to have Bailey levels of turnaround under our manager, and I suspect there are some that will struggle with the detail and perhaps not enjoy it.

That's not to say that's the case with Diaby but we don't know.

As others have said, we already seem to have the replacements in for Diaby.  It wouldn't be a huge loss to the team with Buendia, Ramsey and Rogers in the squad.  Hopefully, Unai has someone else lined up.  Perhaps Baena?

I might be mistaken, but hadn’t Diaby agreed terms last time?
We matched them, and he signed for us.
So, possibly, this could just be a regurgitated story

I thought that too.

I was just about to mention this. There were rumours about them being in for him before we signed him last summer.

I'd rather not sell him, but if we get offered stupid money I'd trust our current backroom team to use the profits to improve the squad.

I've every confidence we are going to bring in two big signings - this could allow a third.

Probably right, would he be training with us if he were in transfer talks with them?  Not sure how this works any more.  I presume the Chambers deal is all but done as he's not there.

This is a simple one, if we can make a £10-15m profit on a frustratingly inconsistent player, with Monchi and Unai confident they have a replacement in mind, it's good business to do it.

Apparently the noses have gazzumped the Saudis and it is now up to the player to decide.

Diaby is a very talented player as we saw in pre season and his first couple of months. I’m pretty sure he wasn’t happy here though, he looked miserable, almost sulky at times, and this was largely reflected in his performances after that initial period. It could be pointed out that he was still contributing but knowing how good he could/should have been for most of the season he was definitely under par for me. If he wanted to stay and we kept him that would be fine but if he’s happy to leave for what we paid or even for more I’d take it gladly.

If he ends up going to Saudi does this suggest that part of the problem was that he regretted not going in the first place? Is money really his primary focus? It would make you wonder.

I agree with you pair. I didn’t think he was all that in the first couple of months, when everyone was raving about him. I said so on here, just in case anyone thinks this is revisionism.

If, and it's a big if, Diaby does end up in Saudi, at a club owned by the owners of Newcastle, what's the betting on him being 'loaned back' to them and thereby getting round FFP or whatever it's called this month.

How on earth have 'personal terms' been agreed ?
Isn't that the final piece after the Clubs have agreed a sale and a fee ?

Ive seen that quite a lot this summer. You'd think so but maybe we could have 'given him permission to speak to them' if we had at least a rough gentlemans agreement over the fee involved with the final details to be 'thrashed out' once we know he's happy to go.

Not any more it seems. Teams rarely bid unless they’re certain the player is interested. Used to be called tapping up.
