I have no problems with the optics of this move because every man and their dog knows we have an SCR agreement with UEFA that needs resolving as quickly and efficiently as possible.  It is very clear also that Chelsea are having to sell a lot of their own top players to pay such a huge fee so they, as far as I can see, are very much a selling club these days. 

My hunch is Villa did not want to sell to Arsenal and ended up leaning on the owners' relationship with Chelsea's ownership to strike up a mutually beneficial deal.

Chelsea have been after him for ages, I seem to recall an actual quote from a senior club official saying that if Villa ever considered selling then they would be at the front of the queue and is their number 1 target.

I think that will change this season, Alonso is a good appointment and they can’t stay crap forever with their squad. Spurs however….

Rogers is a fantastic player when played in a system that is geared up for him to shine - this is very specific. We all saw that take him out of that position and he is clearly less effective.

I am waiting for the clever accountants to do a breakdown so we can see what wriggle room we have with buying new shiny things.

I think the money received for Tielemans / Rogers £150m+ hurts us a little as a team but surely could be a launch pad for the next generation of Villa?

If the left back, Esputian (sp) and Gomes actually arrive, add in Paulinho and we have improved age and wages accordingly.

And yet in many ways, the squad looked more ripe for an overhaul last season, where our "one last push" appeared to run aground at OT.

When Lindelof on a free is your best signing, followed by a 35 year old reserve keeper, it hasn’t been great.

I remember when West Ham had a great transfer window until they started playing.

It was a shit window. Guessand was gone after 6 months, Elliott was bizarre, Sancho peaked at ok a few times. Lindy and Bizot were solid but we spunked most of our limited budget on 3 players that were nowhere near vfm and contributed very little and offered no VORP.

Granted, transfers in is a small part of the transfer window, and a couple of them made good contributions, so 40% success on the incomings? But the biggest part by far is the 20-odd first team players you’ve already got, and how many of the ones you want to keep, you manage to keep.

For me, the most important factor in judging a transfer window is what the team achieves off the back of it.
