The fee is bonkers, it makes him the 4th most expensive signing of all time.

Maybe he’s looking forward to Wednesdays off? He played a lot of minutes last season.

I'm currently of the mindset that Alonso will do well at Chelsea and a season of not having any European football will be beneficial. I wouldn't be surprised if they ended the season with a domestic cup.  However, since as a club they're always a bad run away from player-power led chaos and a managerial sacking, that wouldn't be surprising, either.

As for Rogers, I suspect he'll do okay and amongst their fans he'll come to be well-regarded rather than hero-worshipped.  I also suspect that Chelsea are themselves a stepping stone and in two or three years he'll be wanting to be like his mate Na Na Na Nananana and secure a move to Spain, provided it's either Real Madrid or Barca.

I’m happy with the fee you really have to be.
But I have no idea how Morgan sees this as progression!

I suspect his wage at Chelsea will be well over double what it was at Villa.

Cannot blame him in that regard.

Not sure about that.  Chelsea’s (newish) model is low wages but for a long duration.  the days of paying Sterling £300k a week are long gone.  I also suspect he was in decent money at Villa given the regular contract renewals (over £100k/week).

He’ll be doubling his salary that’s why he’s going to Chelsea. No other reason.

Caplology has his villa wages at £150/week.  Chelsea would be breaking their wage structure if he is now on £300k/week, but we’ll see, I’m sure the media will announce their guesses shortly.

I wanted him stay but we needed a refresh and we've replaced him and Tielemans already with much younger very good players, and we now have room to strengthen elsewhere and go into the season with a proper squad. If Emery has genuine options to change things from the bench during matches we will yield more points as a result.

And I think it's hilarious how the Arsenal client journalists have been doing their bidding (player wants the move, £80m etc) and have been shown for what they are.

Don't believe anything you see from Capology, they have been proven way out in their figures by the end of year accounts. Chelsea pay out £15.6M a year on James, Palmer, Fernandez and Caicedo, £300k a week so Rogers will be doing similar.

On our WhatsApp groups of Villa fans not much surprise he’s going, quite a bit of surprise on where he’s going. To be fair he’s done brilliantly for us, so a little strange that he was never really a fan favourite, maybe we all knew deep down he saw us as a bridge to one of the Super League club, maybe it was his WBA supporting background, it always seemed understood he wouldn’t be here long.

Spend well my lives, spend well.

Watching Rogers be invisible for the last half hour of England v Argentina, when he was the obvious out-ball on the pitch that England needed, made me wonder if he was suffering from a dose of the Grealishes.

Both he and Jack were allowed do what they wanted on the ball for Villa. Grealish, far better at retaining possession, Rogers with far better end-product. Jack got neutered at City and when he does his post-career interview with The fucking Overlap, he'll admit his happiest football was at Villa.

It'll be interesting to see how Rogers fits into an Alonso system. He has shown he has the potential to prosper in a role with more defined responsibilities for England during the qualifiers and friendlies but he's never going to get the same freedom Unai gave him nor probably the enjoyment from that carte-blanche responsibility. He owes Emery so much.

Bit harsh about the Argentina game comment under the circumstances really.

I reckon Alonso is very system based in the same way UE is, not the same system but wedded to a system all the same. Rogers will do well there, if he settles in before they sack Alonso.

Nah, he'd have held the ball up for Villa and drawn the odd foul.
