You're right about that rebuild, TopDeck113, Gray was the player we missed and hadn't replaced. The Peter Withe signing in 1980 completed the overhaul.

Didn't want him to go of course but if he did we need big cash and we look to have go it. In terms of the future, I'd rather any player go than Emery.

I’m happier he’s going to Chelsea than Arsenal.  Not sure why, but there you are.  We really cannot afford to sell any other first team players now.  It’d be too destabilising.

The team that won the Europa doesn’t deserve boos next season, please let’s not do that.  Those leaving are all dead to me now though obvs.  I hope that final is the high point of their careers.

I’d like to see some Bailey and Guessand in the departure lounge and a top quality winger come in.  Can’t be seeing those two ambling about next season .

I reckon with 6 months hard work you could turn Guessand into a very very decent right back.

Not for me Clive.  We’re in the CL and should have better options than him for a key position in and Emery team.

Dunno what is wrong with you, this is the only man to win 2 european trophies in one season!

I'm not an admirer of Guessand from what I've seen of his performances in a Villa shirt, but in his defence, I don't think he's comfortable playing a wide role, where he has done for us. Doesn't he play more centrally internationally?

150m for 2 players we paid a max 15m for is bonkers.

Who nobody else gave a toss about when we signed them.

Really good profit on a player who doesn’t fancy the Champions League. We’ll get more ambitious players in who are up for the challenge.

I’ve seen that said before, I just don’t see it. Not particularly pointed at you, but I think people have said that because he’s offered so little in attack, and works quite hard. I think his positional sense is well off. It’s possible he could retrain I suppose, but I’m highly sceptical he’d be a top level full back and I think it’d take way more than 6 months.

I did say at the end of last season he might be the first player to move to play less given how Emery kept playing him, and he has.

Lazy get.

We're losing a player who Emery obviously likes very much and one that links well with Ollie. It's a ridiculous amount of money though. I presume we'll add our own sell on clause if he ever leaves there.

Ha yes!

I do wonder if his mate Jude recommended Alonso then remembered how he was hounded out of Real. Its a strange move to a mid table team with no good goalkeepers or defenders.

Anyway his loss.

Also, this sort of sale happens to pretty much every club. Liverpool used the coutinho money to bring in players that ultimately won them the league. We are in a far better position to deal with this (and the loss of tielemans) than at any other time that I can remember since starting to follow the club

I made this very point to a mate last night. But then I also made it when Grealish left.  The difference this time is that we're already a Champions League side, so if the money CAN improve us, then the only improvement is a genuine title challenge.
