Beckham to Real Madrid.
Madrid not a rival to Man Utd. Would they have sold him to Arsenal, Chelsea etc??

Real Madrid and maybe Barcelona are the only clubs that aren't 'selling clubs'.

Yeah, I guess the obvious follow up to that is that some clubs are more 'selling' than others.

Yeah, and some are 'elite European giants' more than others too.

It's almost as though there's a food chain and the further down a club is the more their players are bought by those above them.

But we have billionaires!

Every fucking time every fucking time we stick our heads above the parapets they chop it off. Started with Yorke and Milner and Young and Delphi and Grealish and now Rogers. It’s an absolute skewed playing field.

Always the selling club! Nothing changes despite CL football.
That’s how I feel too. We’ve done everything that can be done, big club, brilliant manager, top 4 and CL to look forward to, hold a European trophy. Thats what most players want. And we still lose a player of his calibre to a team that can’t offer any of that. What’s the point?? He’s dead to me now, like Grealish before him and I wish him nothing but failure in the rest of his career

In the nicest possible way, because I get it, but what do you want or expect?! Man Utd, Bayern Munich, Juventus...they're all selling clubs. We're selling for huge money, like they do.
I don’t really care about Bayern or Juventus. I can’t remember Man Utd selling arguably their best player to a rival. My point was though no matter what we do, our best players think they can do better away from VP.

Ronaldo, Tevez, Beckham.
None went to a rival. Can you honestly see them going to a direct PL rival???

Real Madrid and Manchester City were direct rivals to Manchester United. They weren't competing to be the best team in Cheshire or Castilla.

Hopefully this is getting close to us being able to draw a line under the SCR thing now, which is a huge positive.  The other huge positive is that Rogers isn't going to Arsenal - I think its hilarious that he's off to Chelsea.  I genuinely don't get the wailing and gnashing of teeth, this isn't like Doug flogging off the family silver, this doesn't mean we're a tiny club or that we can never compete for the highest honours; we're playing the (rigged) system as it currently stands and as long as we reinvest smartly we can go into next season with a stronger first team and squad than last season. A final thought: Chelsea are only in the position of being able to meet our fee because they, in turn, are having to flog some of their big names for big money.

I just can't believe it. Great money to get for a guy that we had to play into form during the season. Great player, we'll miss him and he has been brilliant this season when he did get going. Looses the ball a lot though.

Barcelona fans were gutted when Luis Figo, a galactico, was sold to Real Madrid. It happens to the best.

You are right, it does, and tbh, I trust Emery to still get results any way, so I am pretty chilled about this.

However, the obvious retort to the above is that we've done it twice in a week. I get why people are nervous.

Of course, but this is a frustrating one given that we have finished above them.  I say frustrating, but if we're offered £117m for a player then we're taking it and I'm still not convinced Rogers will become a player who really justifies that amount.  I suppose it's the narrative, which we've seen before, of Villa doing well and starting to threaten the higher reaches of the league only for the vultures to start circling (aided by their cheerleaders in the media) and then once one goes, others start wanting to leave as well.  It's almost like it's "well done little Villa, but now it's time to accept you'll never be at the top table and accept your lot".

I suppose it stings a little more coming from Birmingham, as it's how the city is often treated as well.
