I can sort of understand him going to Arsenal, but Chelsea? A mid-table club and no European football, especially no Champions League. The money that club spends and wastes is criminal!

This is either the start of the end of the cycle, or the start of something even more exciting than the last few years. Over to you Unai and co.
Exactly. Upwards, always towards

He was shite for the first few months last season, and was laughed and jeered at in the home game against Bologna on 25th September.

Would anybody in the ground have imagined that 10 months later we'd be getting £117m for him?

Well yeah but the people who did that were idiots. He went through a rough patch, but the point was he was still trying to create and attack - that in a structured system like Unai operates is absolutely huge. That’s why Unai played him all the time as well. I know it’s comforting to pretend he wasn’t great, but he’s going for that money for a reason. It’s going to take a lot to plug that gap.

Obviously I hope in the round we can make ourselves stronger, but it’s not a given.

Happy with the fee. By all accounts we said we wanted more than Anderson, we got more than Anderson.

I thought Anderson was £130m?

Funny to think how many thought we were on crack paying 8m (plus add ons) for him two and a half years ago.

Various sources saying it's a record for a British player.

Well, Rogers to the most plastic of plastic clubs wasn't on my close-season bingo card.

Chelsea have agreed a club record £117m deal to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.

The 23-year-old will sign a six-year deal at Stamford Bridge, with an option for a further year.

Rogers will have a medical on Monday after returning from international duty with England at the 2026 World Cup.

The deal would set a new transfer record for an English player, eclipsing the £116m fee Manchester City agreed with Nottingham Forest for another Three Lions midfielder in Elliot Anderson earlier this summer.

Rogers becomes the most expensive signing in Chelsea's history, surpassing the £107m spent on Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez in 2023.

The move comes as new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso shapes his squad before the new Premier League season.

Rogers, who was previously on the books of Manchester City, joined Villa from Championship side Middlesbrough on 1 February, 2024.

He scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Unai Emery's men and was part of the team that won the Europa League last season.

Rogers has made 21 senior England appearances, scoring once, and featured in six games at this summer's World Cup.
