Ironic cheers as Morgan Rogers completes a pass. #avfc

It was very loud, and does not augur well.
I didn’t see it as ironic.
I saw it as the crowd giving encouragement to a player who is suffering an awful drop off in form and confidence.

I think it started as ironic, and many others made an effort to turn it into a genuine cheer.

I heard what I heard, and I agree that is was sarcastic more than ironic.

Konsa's post-match comments would seem to confirm this.

Rogers is a brilliant young player, and he will rebound from this, but supporters are wondering why he is still on the pitch when nothing is going right for him.

It definitely seemed ironic. I have never booed one of our own so I certainly wouldn't ironically cheer either, I don't understand what you are trying to achieve.

Well, I clapped and cheered that particular pass, hoping to encourage the kid, definitely not to be ironic.

Unai Emery says Morgan Rogers "didn't play well" against Bologna but believes he will grow from the experience of facing a frustrated #AVFC crowd.

"Morgan is young and needs time for experiences. I kept him on because I wanted his reaction, how he was accepting everything."

I like this. Emery is keeping him on to fight through this spell. His first real challenge since he came to the club. His rise with us has been meteoric and maybe there is a bit of a levelling off before he hopefully takes off again. He doesn’t need to be punished for being out of form. He needs to be helped through it. He’s more than good enough to come out the other side a better all round player.

Yeah, that's good from Unai. Imagine an interview with Gerrard under similar circumstances.

But at some point Emery has got to do what is right for the team. Playing Rogers is not doing this, in a 1 nil game having a player who constantly throws away every attack by giving the ball away is asking for trouble. Persevering with him had gone on for too long and does nothing for squad morale. He should have been dropped weeks ago.

I’m as frustrated as anyone with his form but that ironic cheer was embarrassing. He’s not some joke signing like a Tonev or Salifou, the kids playing for England.

Hopefully he gets some encouragement at the next game, we aren’t going to have a good season unless he finds form.

I totally agree. Roger's rise to prominence has been swift and spectacular and when he is on his game he is unstoppable. However he has been appalling in every game this season. Not mediocre or average but awful.

It is one thing keeping a player on to see how he reacts to adversity but repeatedly picking a player brutally out of form endangers the success of the team which has to be the priority at the end of the day.

Emery also doesn't appear to be taking the same approach to Harvey Elliott.

Noticed on the highlights he didn't seem to go across to congratulate McGinn when he scored. Last season he seemed to be one of the first celebrating goals from other players.

He was still on the ground from his in front of goal air swing, probably just disappointed with his attempt.  He's just horribly out of form atm and his confidence has gone.

He was up within a second but too busy seemingly moaning at the ref his shirt was pulled (no, you were well free of him). Maatsen was nowhere to be seen in frame but was there on the touchline. Rogers might have gone to him after the cameras cut away. For fairness Pau and Konsa were also close but didn't go over either, although they might have gone over to Rogers.

He has all the confidence of a kid at a school disco. His passing all season has been the reason we've kept our forwards isolated. It was noticeable at Everton and it was certainly noticeable last night.

Elliott needs to come in for Rogers - ASAP.
