Aston Villa v Man City Post-Match Thread

They looked drunk at times I thought. The amount of unforced errors, lost possession, even saw Ederson slice the ball out for a throw in. Looked really bad for them. Never seen them that sloppy before.

Means nothing to anyone who doesn't know the area, but I live just down the Beeches side of Walsall Rd, by Tower Hill, maybe two miles from VP, and for the first half I thought it was a huge group of supporters at the Towers pub.

I knew what was them missing a chance, I knew what was us going close, I knew what was us winning a corner, and Leon's goal sent shivers down my spine.

And this is from inside the house, behind double-glazing.

I've never known the noise to carry so well and it was absolutely fucking magnificent.

I was gonna ask you about that after your post earlier. Brilliant stuff.

I've lived in this house since I was 2. I spent two years in Lichfield and six in Worcester, but otherwise this has been my home. I have never heard anything like it.

Whether it was just the wind blowing in the perfect direction or not, it was extraordinary. Credit to all the boys and girls there today.

I used to go on the lam from my ex round there. Dyas Avenue I think it was. You must know it.

I've noticed today that a lot of articles and discussions about the game start with the writers/pundits basically saying "we're not going to criticise Man City for a bad performance here because Villa were excellent/brilliant/world class"

It feels like a slight turning in the tide as far as how they're talking about us, and our wins. I've never given two fups what they say about us, but given how often people on here get worked up about the way they report on us, it feels like something worth mentioning.

Man City's Youtube page titling their highlight video "deflected strike sees City lose to Villa" is the only thing I've side eyed today.

I usually hate deflections and feel they should be banned or replaced by a free-kick from the point where the shot was taken but we should have won comfortably last night and deserved a bit of deviation on the pig's bladder.

The collective opinion seems to be they were lucky it was only 1-0. If it was the only shot we had you might feel a little iffy about it, but we dominated them all night.

In fact, if we wanted to rain on our own parade  I'd say that 1 goal from 22 shots, 7 on target, isn't good enough! But 1 goal won the game, so fupp it.

I think I'm still in shock. I remember years back discussing with Chris Smith on here whether teams can perform for 90 minutes rather than having a very good 45 minutes. It may have taken some time but after last night I think I've finally won that debate. What a team performance. Every single one of them for every single minute.

The biggest shock was the performance of Carlos and Torres with Konsa at right back. Every time we've tried it in Europe and at Bournemouth last weekend we've looked shaky and just waiting for a fatal error to occur. Last night they looked like they'd successfully been playing that system for years. Watching Carlos look across the line, stepping up then back then up again to control the offside line was hilarious, Haaland was so busy watching him he forgot to see where the ball was or when to make a run. When he wasn't trying to stay onside skinny Pau Torres had him in his pocket. Another Villa player along side Bailey who had their best games in a Villa shirt.

Words can not explain how much I love our midfield, they are so important to everything we do and must go down in football history as the best £17m ever spent. All four were superb last night. I thought I'd seen the best and most complete midfield performance by John McGinn the other week against Fulham but last night he took it up yet another level. Where he gets the energy from I have no idea but nothing would make me happier and nothing more deserving than to see him lift some silverware as captain of Aston Villa.

I could go on about other players but much has already been said. Final memory will be the Villa fans. Bloody hell, what an atmosphere, what support. There will never be a goal more beautiful than watching the Villa fans celebrate a goal. The TV cameras are close by to the away fans and normally they come across as loud but last night, from the first minute, all I could hear was our fans. Such brilliant support and as Bailey and others have pointed out, it really does help drive the team on.

Unai is building something really special and I believe he's in it for the long haul. Despite nearly shitting myself when I saw his team selection, once we kicked off I never really doubted us. After the goal we looked so comfortable, not once did I think Man City would equalise. We were that good and he deserves all the credit for getting the players to buy-in with his methods. The man's a genius and it's still early days. Allow yourself to dream. This is real.

Ha! In my defence we'd seen nothing before that made me think moving Konsa over to right back and bringing in Carlos would work. I'd also seen the highlights of their game against Spurs when on another day they could have scored close to double figures. I didn't see a queue of people before the game thinking it was a great move either. That said, I will try and tow the 'Unai knows best' line from now on and for the record, it wasn't me that needed a change of underwear for the last 15-20 minutes. I've seen us numerous times comfortably see out games. Yesterday was probably easier than most.

Before I forget, I'm taking credit for the win. I was making spinach, ricotta and pecorino balls before the game and when rolling them out I realised I'd have 13. I made 12. Not that I'm superstitious but I wasn't going to risk it.
