Watch Southgate pick our 2 lads now that the pitch has been revealed as borderline unplayable.

Yep, agree. Italy played on that pitch recently and deemed it to be dangerous. Apparently, it was repaid only 6 weeks ago and it's failed to knit together properly. It begs the question why England have agreed to play on it? These players are worth multi-millions, a potential nightmare for the clubs.

Alexander-Arnold is number 10? Against Malta? Man oh man.

Given one of the very few alternatives to Kalvin Phillips would be trying Alexander-Arnold at defensive midfield, it feel like trying him and Rice tonight would have been a lot more sensible.

Good to see Gareth can take advice on board.

Good to see Rico Lewis jump the queue and get a start. I wonder if that would have happened if he wasn’t at Man City. Answers on a postcard

Which left-backs are you worried that he's jumped ahead of in this queue?

Probably not, but then he doesn't have much cover for LB does he? I suppose he could pick Dan Burn.

Why aren't people worried week by week and day by day about a player not suffering an injury every time they show up for training and matches at Villa? A player can get injured at any time. And they actually take more knocks and injuries when with the club.
We all have our theories, but this thinking about injuries during the international period is a fallacy.

If a player gets injured in the league, playing for the team that pays them and which supporters love, it is one of those things. However when a player gets injured playing for a shit manager, especially in a meaningless friendly, it is a real kick in the teeth. And I would argue that especially in qualifiers, the lower quality of the opposition and like today, the facilities can percentage wise be more likely to cause injuries then a 38 game league season.

And that also doesn't include the different training regime they suddenly might find themselves in, the travel and the players picked not getting the rest during a gruelling season, especially with the December we have coming up.

He’s done pretty well playing Trippier who is a really a RB at LB. I’d sooner seen him keep his place than throw in a kid barely out of the academy, and not player Harry Maguire again at CB and rotated there.

Trippier is not available for this match.
