Sir William was chairman then. He resigned from the board, along with (I think) Alan Smith in order to force the contract issue.

See Aston Villa 1977-1980...
I bet the forums were in meltdown when we lost Gray and Little within a year of each other.
Oh we were in pure cold rage. My post one day summed up my anger:

Dear Mr Saunders, May I suggest you don't know what you are doing

Yes I know a bit strong but it was needed.

The terraces were calling for Ron to be sacked as he ripped apart his late 70s team prior to building his early 80s side. He remains an object lesson in giving managers time...

I don’t remember that. I remember when there were rumours of him going to Saudi on the back of the Mail, and at the next match there was a tremendous show of support for him from the Holte, where I was. Later on it was suggested that Ron manufactured the situation to show Ellis who was the fans’ darling. If that was true, it worked a treat.

Can’t have been Ellis who was the chairman of the Villa for two separate spells: first from 1968 to 1975 and again from 1982 until 2006.

I do remember Saunders threatening to resign if Ellis won a shareholders vote challenging to be Chair which he subsequently lost!

True, but after he left the chair he was still a major shareholder and power on the board until ‘79, and was using the sales of Gray and Gidman to ferment rebellion against Saunders. When that didn’t work he sold up and left for three wonderful years.

That’s right that was the vote I was talking about. I had a share from my first birthday and voted against Ellis!

Thanks Uri for some great memories and "that" goal.

But...signing for them will mean you are instantly dead to me and I am sure countless others.

When you hear the likes of King of the ******, Goldstein, discuss you as a squad player you should worry that they are the kind of morons you may be playing in front of.
Enjoy the money and maybe a trophy hear or there but you will be roundly booed when next at VP and justifiably so.

You are now a red piece of shit.

He served us brilliantly. When he played he was often the best player on the pitch. Scored some cracking goals especially his last one. He restructured his contract to help keep us in line with PSR. He didn’t have to do that. The lower release clause was clearly a part of that agreement. We couldn’t offer him a contract which is ultimately on us as shit as the rules are. Man U nipped in and exercised the clause. It’s his last big pay day something I doubt we could have even matched. He should get welcomed back and booed loudly while the game is on. But as shit as it is that he’s gone to them, as with most players we’ve lost to them, we couldn’t offer what they could be it competitively and financially, or in this case almost exclusively financially.

He’s scored the first goal in a game that won us our first trophy for a generation, I’d be amazed, and more than a bit disappointed, if he didn’t get a fairly warm welcome back. Unless something else happened in the meantime.

Personally I think we'll look back on this transfer positively.

He was good for us.

Luiz was good for us too. I wonder if he'll come back again.
