You're never going to forget physical assault and not feel sore about it, no matter how long ago.

I was listening to a podcast and they mentioned how Dixie Dean had to have a bollock removed after a nasty challenge for Tranmere when he was 17. Then 17 years later in a pub in Chester a man brought him a pint and he recognised it was the one who caused him to lose a bollock so he went over and battered him. Haven't looked this up but it's quite funny to retaliate 17 years later if it is.

Reminded me of a 12-year delayed Mafia revenge murder for a punch in the face back in the sixties/seventies.

About 10 years ago some bloke was asking for change outside the offie up by me, was about 9 o'clock, quite dark and nobody else about. I was about to cough up as he looked worse for wear but then I recognised him as the ****** that had put my mate in hospital unprovoked when he was 16, which would've been about 20 years before. I was so close to giving him a shoeing on the spot, I'm glad I didn't in hindsight and it's enough to know his life choices had led to that anyway.

Haaland has only needed 44 games to bring up his half-century - with 34 Premier League goals, 12 in the Champions League, three in the FA Cup and one in the Carabao Cup.

Anyone know how many matches Pongo played in his record breaking season as he only played 44 games that season if he was an ever-present. And in those days, if you started you played the 90.

Did they know they was punching mafia? Obviously it's pretty unlucky if they didn't.

Sorry mate, it was in the middle of an eight-part podcast. I can’t recall for sure and I’m not listening again yet. I will do one day though. Because of the time span and number of members, there are literally hundreds of compelling Cosa Nostra stories. It’s so hard to keep track.

I don't understand why sky sports insist on picking out selective stats of the Premier League era when there are what, 110-120 more years of football that existed before they changed the name of the league in the early 90s. If they are going to do that, then they need to start the history books again every time the sponsors name changes. Halaand is currently the third highest scorer behind Dean & Waring in English top division league football. And he has done that with half of the worlds finances being used to purchase his current squad. The likes of Dean & Waring did it on boggy pitches with a football that weighed more than Halaands ego.

I suppose the counter argument to that is that Haaland is doing it against better defenders from a far wider pool of players. Not to mention that tactical innovations have caught up with the change in the offside rule in 1925 which statistics suggest teams were struggling with in the 20s and 30s.

Not making out Haaland is any better than those players of old, just that it's impossible to compare.

Making direct comparisons from decade to decade is tough enough, once you're getting to 50-60 year timescales there are so many changes that it's almost impossible to give a fair comparison. It doesn't mean the achievements of the past are any less spectacular, it just means they might as well have come in a different sport.

My pleasure. I listened to the first couple of episodes again - very enjoyable so thanks for reminding me. I’d be interested to know what you think of it.

Its not just 60 years timescale that they do it, they have been doing it ever since 1990.

They were ignoring 1989 in 1992...

To me, the fairest way to make the comparison is to just count the top division from inception to present day.

Yes, technology, pools of talent, rules, etc, move on, but so will the records that reflect that.

Otherwise it is just subjective selective stats to fit a narrative.
