The public position of Monchi and Emery has been we have competitions and we need to have sufficient quality and quantity of players to compete. So if we are moving out some of these kids we have to believe afresh are coming in before the deadline. It would make no sense otherwise.

So Philogene, Aaron Ramsey and Digne all off somewhere else, with our injury list too, we must have another three of four coming in I would have thought.

If we do those deals, and don't get a few in, we are nuts.
In January when we were all crying out for signings that didn’t happen, we were calling the situation nuts, then too.

Cancelo to Barca looks to be happening this week. For a team that apparently can't afford Felix they're spending money anyway. Wonder where he'll end up by the end of the window.

Not sure there's that many gaps when you really break it down and try to look at it through Emery's eyes.

Goalkeeper
Martinez -- Olsen -- Marshcall
Can't see there being any change

Full-backs
Cash -- Moreno -- Digne
Gap at right back and Digne would need replacing

Centre Backs
Konsa -- Chambers -- Pau -- Carlos
Chambers or Konsa could play right back at a push but it disrupts the defence and it goes against what Emery said about having 2 options per position.

Centre Midfield
Luiz -- Tielemans -- Kamara -- Dendoncker
Would only need someone if we sold Dendoncker.

Attacking Midfield
Zaniolo -- Bailey -- McGinn -- Ramsey
Think we're done here.

Strikers and Centre Forwards
Watkins -- Duran -- Diaby -- Coutinho
Can't see there being any changes here either. Archer left out as we seem to want to move him on.

So can only see Emery seeing a gap at right back and if any of these were to leave. Or wanting to move someone on if he were to still bring someone in.

The season we won the league in 1980/81, Colin Gibson played left back in 19 games, and Gary Williams in 21. I can't recall one being better than the other, or having a preference for seeing one rather than the other in the team. The point being, I suppose, that with all the cup games we hopefully have coming up, it should be possible to utilise both Digne and Moreno to good effect, keeping each reasonably happy. In my view it would be a shame to see Digne go, at least in this window.

I do think that selling Digne with Moreno near to a return would probably be creating an avoidable problem

Unless there’s someone coming in Paulie?

Sure, but I wonder if Monchi’s time would be better spent on other positions

Right back is baffling. Our lack of wide players of quality was highlighted by our only right back finishing the game at right wing too. Monchi needs to sort out 2-3 players for a bit of depth. Especially at the speed were losing players.

Just curious, are people expecting our RB to have similar stats to the left back, as I don’t think that’ll happen under Emery’s system. Or is it cash’s defensive qualities that people question?

There is justification to replace cash but I think Emery will want a CB/RB hybrid rather than a right sided Moreno.

I have never been particularly convinced with Cash, and am becoming less so now Emery is here. Unlike practically every other player, we have not seen any improvement in Cash under Emery's tutelage. I think we need an upgrade. I think we have certainly been looking for one too, as we have had a few links with younger Spanish players that have fizzled out.

Agree with you though that I don't think we will see a Moreno type player come in at right back. Emery will want someone that suits his asymetric system. Indeed he has already suggested that much of the time a centre back might play there (shades of Martin O'Neall). With that in mind I think we see a utility player that can cover both positions signed. Perhaps though Emery thinks we have this already in Chambers, who has not been linked with any moves away from Villa.

I think the reason people are speculating on a more attacking style right back is that it would allow us to shift to the same asymetric system flipped round to attacking down the right and defending down the left. Not sure that will happen as we seem to be moving to two similar left backs. I also think we would have to vary the centre back partnership to achieve this, and rejig the midfield, so it would be quite disruptive.

Walker would be able to play both systems. Anyone know a young/cheap version of him?

At the end of the match yesterday we saw more of a 3421 formation - which we'll probably use in European away matches, as it gives the flexibility to be 5 at the back.

I like Matty and thought he was good yesterday. He made so many clever runs, but more often than not Bailey didn't see them/use him.

If we can find a better player than Cash and sign him up, he's going to be excellent because Cash is pretty decent.
