I thought we'd finally signed someone from civil war-era Alabama when I saw the thread title.

great article again and I wonder if this is where my late Father got his often ridiculed middle name of Cornelius...

(although I thought it was cool to have the middle name of Cornelius)

My ex-wife’s family had a friend called Cornelius known as Corney. He was originally from county Cork and had such a thick brogue that in all the years I knew him I never understood a single word he said.

Great story. Isn’t he the only player to have been a first choice international as both a keeper and an outfield player?

His son, Mick, lived down the road from us in the late 70’s, when he was playing for the Albion. He used to drive a massive white Sweeney-style Ford Granada and always waved at us when he drove past. Friendly fella, even signed his Panini sticker for one of my Albion- supporting mates.

England 3 Hungary 6 was 53, not 54. The return match, Hungary 7 England 1, was in 54.

My dad would speak fondly of Con Martin.  Until reading the post above, I never knew that Mick Martin (Albion) was Con Martin's son.
