Even Alan Hansen only got 26. No wonder they never progressed in tournaments.

Willie Miller and Alex McLeish wasn’t it?

Wish Scotland had some centre-halves like that now.

Wasn't there a bias against the ones playing in England back then. Or have I dreamt that?

Hansen kept pulling out of squads (or so Ferguson said afterwards).

Wasn't it more just because Miller and McLeish had an understanding from club level? Before my time but I'm sure I've heard it mentioned on a podcast at some point.

I'm sure I've seen somewhere that it was more to do with just the general infrastructure that surrounded everything back then.  FAs didn't have the number of employees scouting games that we have now, and so relatively few players actually got watched regularly, exacerbated by the fact that there was no TV or video footage available of matches as there would be now.  As a result, Scotland teams featured mainly those playing for Scottish teams, despite most of their best players at the time probably playing in England.

Similarly, England teams always had an inordinate number of London based players as they were the teams that were easiest to go and watch, and who got the most press coverage.

Also sticking in London players got the gates up for international matches, some of which were piss poor compared to today.

Unai Emery: “My break is a pretty complete break in terms of football. I follow the Euros, but I only watch a few games. I try to do things that I don’t do during the year — walking, going to the beach, making family meals, being with my friends. In terms of the work, I also try to be very effective. Every day I am able to be on the phone for an hour & see for myself some things about Aston Villa for next season..”

Emery: “The goal when I arrived at the club was to try to consolidate a team that went to Europe on a recurring basis. And if we entered Europe, try to consolidate the needs of players to compete at that level — in that process we are doing it fast. In six months we entered the Conference League, & in a year & a half we have entered the Champions League..” #avfc

Emery: “I wanted to play a final, I wanted to win a final, but I accepted that the Olympiacos were better than us. We were immersed in the fight for the Champions League & the League — competing with Tottenham. We arrived in strength, we had many injured along the way. I focused more on my strength, my energies on trying, first, to enter the Champions League & second, trying to make the (Conference League) final..” #avfc

Emery: “So, the Aston Villa process for me right now is a process where I want to give the maximum. I want to enjoy it to the fullest. I want to use all my learning, all my experiences, to try to restore that confidence to the owners of the club & all the Aston Villa fans..” #avfc

Emery: “For Aston Villa, let’s see if we are able to maintain the Champions League. There are teams that have been going in & out — like Real Sociedad. My greatest challenge next season is to be competitive in the Champions League, not to participate for a year as something anecdotal..” #avfc

"My break is a pretty complete break, except for the time I'm still working, but other than that.... and I watch the Euros, but other than watching the football and working, it's a complete break."

I think he also mentioned that Real Union will spend some of pre-season at Bodymoor Heath while we are in the US.
