Right this minute, which top manager would want the Manchester United job?

Parasitic owners, entitled supporters and a ground that needs tens of millions spending to bring it up to the level of condemned. There'll always be someone egotistical enough to think they can change that round, or happy enough to fail there for twelve months for their CV, but there are many reasons why that someone won't be Unai Emery.

After his raw deal at Arsenal, Unai had a point to prove!!

No doubt, he could have a got a job at a so called bigger club, but, winning anything there is half expected and doesn't prove much.

Step in Aston Villa, a giant in a coma for 40 years. Win something there and the footballing world stands up and pays attention.

Unai won't leave us until the trophy cabinet is full and his point is proven.

I'd agree with that to a point. I don't think he'll leave this year if we don't qualify for CL. But we will have to get there next season, if not this season, or he probably will start to look at other offers.

Surely though the lack of "success" in this scenario is going to limit the interest that other clubs might have? If he finishes say,
seventh, sixth, sixth with us over the next couple of years - is that the sort of record that is going to have Barcelona or Bayern Munich desperate to make him their manager?

Fair point. I just think there'll be an acceptable level of progress he'll have set, and if things start to stall and we're not getting to the heights he's aiming for, he might decide to move on.

 As far as other clubs actually wanting him, it depends on where the "failure" comes for us. If he gets us into Champions League and in or around the top of the table, say 2 seasons in a row, but we've still no trophies, there will undoubtedly be people saying that it's as far as anyone can take Aston Villa and its still a mark of how good a manager he is. At a "big" club, he could really win things.

As I said though, I can't see it happening this season or next, unless things really fall apart out of nowhere.

Pretty much every mention of Emery (outside Villa Park) is based on myth. Links to the Newton Heath job are justified through the myth of that club still being the 1999 vintage.

I was going to write something to this effect. Newton Heath were phenomenally successful under Ferguson, but for years now they've been just one of a large bunch of teams vying for a limited number of top-four spots. They'll never again dominate like they used to, for the simple reason that everyone else has improved vastly. The game has become so professionalised, and there are so many high quality players around, that it's no longer possible for a handful of clubs to monopolise them. Abu Dhabi City obviously have the pick of the elite (and they had to resort to cheating to do it), but there's no shortage of great players out there for everyone else, and plenty of money to buy them thanks to the popularity of the Premier League.

In short, despite the sickening rise of the oil tramps, the competition is actually now more open in some ways. The wealth gap isn't as meaningful as it used to be. There's no reason we can't equal the success of the so-called "big" clubs.

At Villareal there was a ceiling to what was, or in truth, what could ever be achieved. He’s wanted a bigger challenge and so far he’s probably ahead of the curve which makes him more attractive to perceived bigger clubs. None of this matters as Wes and Naz are in the process of blackening themselves up like the Papa Lazouro character.

He has jumped clubs for 'better' jobs before. I seem to remember something happening around this time last year, for example. It's not the work of Satan to suggest he might do so again when the chance arises.

He'd been there a few years and won stuff before he jumped though.

Yes, I think he'll want to win something and qualify for the CL with us.  After that he may consider it job done.  It's for our owners to convince him he can go the next steps with us too.

When he does go, I think he'll take everything with him.  That's the risk we have taken to secure such a good manager.

I think what we have to remember is most of the media and TV companies who’ve brought football want to see certain clubs prosper. The ones they’ve pushed since football was invented in 1992 and the ones they’ve earned lots of money from world wide with subscriptions and TV rights.
Let’s not forget the super league which a number of clubs in this country signed up to before backing off from.
All of this would be at risk if other clubs dare to break up the monopoly. The unease at our club trying to do this means our coach and players will be touted amongst the clubs they care about.
We used to have quality local newspapers who backed every club but look at it today. If you can’t get them to fight our corner what hope is there?
Emery has been ridiculed at Arsenal and by some on radio and TV. I’ve seen and heard it and now, all of a sudden he’s being pushed towards a number of clubs who’ve shown they’ve thrown coaches away like confetti.
I’m sure Emery knows all of this, appreciate’s the size of this club and the power he has inside it. We are well run, we appreciate what he’s doing here and he’s got the time to do it. There is no ceiling at our club.
He’s not a stupid man, he won’t run off unless he feels he’s not getting the backing he needs.
The media don’t know anything about our club because they aren’t interested so relax because he’s leading us somewhere we’ve not been for far too long.

Not only that but a disjointed, overly expensive squad of players, without a proper team in sight.

It's a challenge there, but with the issues with the ownership etc too, it's not happening.

Emery has been given everything he wanted when he came here. So our owners have held their side of the bargain. The players clearly love him, the fans clearly love him and he has his own team of people around him.

There's no limit here, we've done it before and he'll do whatever it takes to get us challenging again. Until we've had some success (and I mean proper success) he's not leaving. He won't get what he has with us anywhere else.

I also don't think their owners would want to take the expensive option of getting a big name manager already at a big club.

On a more positive note, Emery said in his press conference that he wants us to be in the Champions League in the next 2 years.
