Oh yes, but for FFP reasons that can't have helped them much. We really have done well FFP wise with those 5.

I don't think that's right. They paid £12m for Jota, sold him two years later for £41m, so there's £35m profit. Neves was bought for £16m, and sold for £47m after 6 years, so almost all profit. Gibbs-White was a youth player so that's between £25m and £40m pure profit with add ons. Well over a hundred million right there, just for three players.

I'm sure I read on Molineux Thicks at some point over the last year that their financial issues are down to the fact that Fosun insists on taking £50m per year as a return on its investment so the club has to make a hell of a lot for there to be enough left to reinvest in players. No doubt I (or whichever Roy "Chubby" Brown t-shirted MM contributor I got it from) am talking bollocks.

I love taking the occasional look at Molineux Mix, they're such a bunch of absolute twats on there.

Basically they collective emotion at that place the last few months has been one of shaking their fist skywards and shouting "IRRAY FAIR! HOW CUM VILLA AY GOT THESE PROBLEMS?"

I think Wolves highlight that if you're going to invest heavily on the playing side, it's vital that you win something.
Yes but I am sure there are more knowledgeable people on here to input on this but I would have thought the trick is to spend loads to start and over the next few seasons increase your revenue to a level where you can carry on spending to stay competitive and keep increasing your revenue. If you stall at this stage and the commercial deals are not delivering higher revenue and there is no regular European football, and no trophies then it's going to come home to roost. That's where Wolves are and that's what we need to avoid.

Increasing your revenues whilst spending makes sense.  We may have an issue when we shrink the stadium for a season (or whatever) but hopefully that will be brief enough and not followed by Covid, so we can ride it out.

at some point it looks like they got a bit carried away with themselves financially (who would have thought it)

FOSUN are in a mess in China aren't they? I thought FFP was the figleaf for why they won't invest.

They just got stung over a couple of windows. Clubs with solid revenue and who are constantly improving can take the hit of a shit signing or 2, Wolves had a couple of years where they had a decent squad but didn't really improve it with signings like Semedo and Fabio Silva which gave them a choice last season, they could spend big and hope they got it right and went up the table again or they could accept they were going to have to cut back a bit and play it a bit safer. They went for the big spending and again spent their money badly and then doubled down by agreeing a big fee to add this summer which they couldn't afford.

Or to put it another way, they're in the shit because they've spent £300m since summer 2020 and none of that money has given them goals, 36, 38 and 31 for the last 3 seasons is pathetic.

We've also seen first hand how disruptive it is when you have to sell players you really don't want to.

Are they not also impacted by the Chinese government clamping down on their companies burning lots of money on football clubs?

Anyway, whatever has caused it, I like it.

You find yourself watching players that were never good enough play 100 games because nobody else wanted them. It must be hard for them.

Lol.

To an extent but the problems are more straightforward, they have been majorly impacted by the prolonged shutdown in China, have invested heavily in what are now non performing assets and borrowed heavily to fund these investments.
They are now deleveraging so obviously are not looking to fund non- core and non- China based activity.

I’d add that the primary beneficiary of that investment in the playing squad appeared to be “Jorge Mendes Pension Plan Inc” which wasn’t exactly thinking for the longer term either.

In fairness, haven't we contributed handsomely to that fund too?

Probably but I’d suggest it’s been done with more thought rather than prostitute virtuality our whole transfer strategy to what suits his clients.

He'll take us to the top
I just can't get enough, I just can't get enough
The good times are back again
And I just can't seem to get enough
