Young did play well at RB I thought.

Yep, he was very good. First half was shocking. Second half much better, their keeper let's be honest was key but we annihilated them for a finish. Maybe a combination of them getting tired and our three attacking subs looking very sharp. The form of McGinn and Coutinho is a big worry, Kamara very disappointing again. Felt sorry for McGinn missing that chance, he needed a boost. Class goal from Bailey.

Is Mcginn really the first name on the teamsheet now? Absolute joke, he's not a leader.

Crap. Same mistakes long term as in Ings and Watkins together, McGinn in the side. No faith in younger players. Same game plan. A win but not convinced of anything other than a West Ham beating Sunday.

If you can't find some positives or even make an attempt at being happy when we win,  then seriously,  find another hobby.

Blimey. The first half was poor, but there were positive signs in the second half and some nice interplay.

Job done: through to the next round. I was particularly impressed by our marauding vocal captain, who dragged us through a difficult fixture by the scruff of the neck and led by example. Awesome.

It’s a win. The weaknesses are still obvious but hopefully that’ll be addressed in the next week or so. I really can’t find it in myself to lay into any manager after a win. I do have reservations but that’s for another time. UTV

Great win. McGinn looks a shadow of the player he used to be. Subs did well.

I think this was a bit like in the second half of the everton game - theres just some faint signs that things might click.

Just really need to build on that, and work out why we never really click

There's always going to be one or two posters really unhappy with a 4 1 away win, its the nature of forums.

From the little I saw of him I think Tim has a big future.

Positives
- A good away win which should bring some confidence and into the next round of the cup.
- Lovely goals from Bailey and Luiz. Digne's first goal will hopefully help his confidence in contributing in attack.
- Archer brought some energy and more thrust to the attack. It may have been against tiring and demoralised legs but I'd like to see him and Watkins start. It may bring more out of Coutinho (whom we can assume now is never going to start with Buendia) with more runners and pressers in front of him.
- Came back to win after going a goal down.

Negatives
- McGinn. Awful. As a few have said in the match thread comments, McGinn is going to be Gerrard's downfall and I agree.
- Watkins petulance at being substituted. Captain or manager need to have a word and bring him in line.
- The same problems we've seen already are still persisting without redress. In the first half Bolton exploited these. A better side would have hurt us more.
- Still no clean sheet this season. Poor considering who we've played.

I take heart in some way from the poor first half and the improvement in the second half. We could have shrunk but we didn’t and that’s encouraging. Lots more to do, but it’s progress.

It's hard to fathom how poor SJM has become over the last couple of months. I can't quite put my finger on it, but he just isn't doing anything well at the moment. Sad state of affairs for him, given he's got the armband now. Let's hope he can turn it around.

I was really happy to see Dougie, Leon and Digne (rough first half aside) get on the scoresheet. Hopefully a good boost of confidence for all of them.

Happy with the second half and controlled the game after the second went in, Digne gets his first in a Villa shirt and nice goal from Bailey.

Not sure what's happened to McGinn, he doesn't even use his fat arse any more to shield the ball.

I didn’t see the game but followed it here

The consensus seems that we were rubbish first half and yet, with no changes for the first 25 minutes , we were much better second half

So what did we do to improve things?

We are through but it was still poor.
