It’s between him and Stan for the best left back I’ve seen at Villa. Sad to see him go but it’s probably best for all parties.

A very nice chap by all accounts too, will get a great reception if he ever comes back to Villa Park.

Charlie Aitken for me.

Alan Wright and Wilfred Bouma deserve a mention in this discussion.

A shame Lucas is going for the equivalent of a croissant and a pain au chocolat, but at least it's a huge wage bill off the spreadsheet.

Thank you for your service.

Edit, not checked to see if it's been mentioned already, but hasn't he had issues with finding French language schools for his kids, so has been commuting from London?

Best since Staunton for me.

Great left back in our best sides for 30 years…or more and one the leaders in the team. Great end to his career for him, well deserved.

Agreed. As others have said, he'll always be welcome at Villa Park.

Are the full-back positions the most underwhelming "best ever" choices in Villa's history?

Yes, but right back is even slimmer pickings than left back.

Could well be. I always thought Aitken was our best left back but he played most of his record breaking long career in crappy Villa teams. Gidman was my favourite right back from a time when Villa had improved. Can’t think of many good ones until very recent times.

I seem to recall a pretty good one venturing down the left.

Yes, but right back is even slimmer pickings than left back.

Was just telling my boy about Gidman, the best attacking full-back I ever saw (for us). And then there was Swain. I also told him about Gray and Withe. As you might guess, I was telling him so he wouldn’t worry about Digne & Tielemans going.

Williams and Gibson were both great left-backs - Gibson was my favourite.

I agree.

Charlie Aitken was special back in the day.

Mark Delaney was a very good right back for us, when he wasn't  injured.
