Also are nice biscuits pronounced as  the word nice (ie it would be nice to win the league) or the place nice (ie we have Nice in the first round of the europa cup)

Even in early 80s rural Ireland it was pronounced "niece" as in the French city. There must have been an ad to to put us right. ;)

They're called nice (first pronunciation) in our house, and anyone calling them Niece or anything of the sort gets no biscuits at all.

No worries, I probably haven't bought a packet of biscuits in 25 years as not a massive fan. Might have the odd one at my Dad's if he says he has some nice biscuits in (but not the ones pronounced "niece" as they're rubbish). :)

Well that's not very nice, is it?

Quotes from the BBC Feed about the press conference.

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has been speaking ahead of his side's opener against Bournemouth: "We’ve had a couple of niggles within the last seven days – Tyrone [Mings] and Emi [Buendia] to name a couple, but we have a full squad available who trained yesterday.

“Kortney [Hause] is not back, Keinan [Davis] is back and the plan is for him to get some minutes in the U21 game.”

Gerrard on his new captain: “I think John McGinn is universally respected, he’s been around the club for a long time, the fans adore him, everyone around Bodymoor Heath and Villa Park has major respect for John."

On former captain Tyrone Mings: “I think it’s been really smooth, and I think that’s credit to Tyrone’s reaction. I spoke to Tyrone first before I spoke to anyone else, I gave him my reasons and some of those will remain private, I think that’s fair.”

Gerrard on his hopes for the season: "We’re very much looking forward and trying to improve our league position and finish in the top half, we want to have positive cup runs as well. “We want to try and make our fans happy."

On pre-season: "We’ve had a smooth pre-season, the application has been superb but now it’s for real.

"I’m confident that we can improve on our inconsistencies last season, that’s the most important thing for me."

Gerrard on new signing Boubacar Kamara: "Positionally, he knows where to be. He’s clever, he’s intelligent and I think he’ll improve us, as a coach you need people that make the right decisions on the pitch."

On transfers: "As a manager, you always want your players in as early as possible to get them a full pre-season.

"People forget how quick and efficient we were, and the standard of player we brought in."

Top half?!

That would be our best league performance in 12 years l don't see why he'd state anything grander than that even if the aim is a lot higher.

I know but it just makes it all seem a bit...pointless.

With the current top 3 or 4 teams being way ahead of the pack, it's not surprising that it might seem a little 'pointless'. What makes it less so is to do well in the 2 domestic cup competitions because that success will drive future success in the League.

Gary Neville reckons we'll be safe but we'll struggle, won't get relegated but he worries about us under Gerrard. Bless him.

Top half is progress - i wouldn’t see that as pointless we are clearly taking a measured and sustainable approach to how we work as a club and how we get to where we want to be.

14th yo say 9th would be good progress

Liverpool and Man City will probably be safe too.

The players keep talking about qualifying for Europe so it's pretty clear what the internal goals are even if Gerrard won't state that when asked.
