It's become of a meme/social media/mental health clichť in recent years, "Be the best version of yourself" but that's not to say there's no merit to it (unlike, say, the more for humorous-effect slogans "The struggle is real"/"Can't even..." etc.)

I think it was something one of his former managers told him as a player, Benitez or Houllier if memory serves.

Its also a good balance between motivating players to improve without putting the pressure on them to feel like they need to be better than other players.

Iím struggling to think of a single thing heís said of any significance that I disagree with. There is a refreshing openness and transparency about how he communicates. Now itís very early and two wins in and hard fought defeat vs Man City everything is naturally quite rosy. So he will hit a tough patch eventually so it remains to be seen if he can retain his composure. But heís clearly a very driven individual. And while you can be a friend to the players as Dean was, at the level Gerrard reached you have to be a bastard. You can see that in him and Iím sure John Terry likely wasnít a lot different.

No doubt.

If he starts losing lots of games then what he says will sound stupid and tiresome It's always the case - it was the same with Smith. But so far so good, I like what he's doing.

Superb interview on Sky now with our mate Carragher. Comes across superby well, I could listen to him talk for hours. (Gerrard, not Carragher)

Really enjoying watching us currently.

Dean was a bit painting by numbers manager with the like for like subs he made and predictable tactical tweaks. On evidence of first four games Gerrard is going to be anything but.

We have been absolutely superb in the second half since he came in. That comes down to the instructions he sets at half time, the tactics he employs, the subs heís made and the way he has the players motivated to finish games strongly and organized.

you can tell the players would run through a brick wall for Gerrard.
