Thought this deserved a thread of its own, but, mods, feel free to merge if you don’t think so.

An interesting insight to the keepers training, something that doesn’t really get mentioned.

Thanks for sharing that, a great watch. Cutler has done wonders since he came to the club, deserves a lot of credit.

I still don't get how coaching works at that level. I get that lots of that particular video is for the cameras, but what is Neil Cutler actually teaching Martinez?

"Oh, cheers Neil. Get up quickly after I've made a save you say? Like I did that time in the f**king Copa America final the other day?"

Obviously not having coaches isn't an option, but surely top-level players must spend a lot of their time feeling very patronised.

Good that, thanks.

When I did the coaching badge I asked the trainer, who was at Wolves, the same thing, ‘what can you really teach an experienced, professional player in terms of technique etc.?’

He said it was more about making repetition of positive technique drills interesting, or certainly not boring, so that good habits became instinctive.

Reactions, conditioning, accuracy of passing are all part of the keeper coaching. I loved taking time out from training the main group to doing some bits of keeper training when I was managing and coaching. It’s true about keepers being a bit bonkers too. Great fun.

I doubt that, I think that possibly coaching at the high level is very much about fine margins and analysis of every last detail. So it's possibly why in years past, obsessives like Mourinho Benitez Wenger Klopp have all been successful despite not having Pele like playing careers.

Cutler isn't going to teach Martinez how to pull off world class saves, but he is going to pore over hours of footage, and point out habits or patterns that he thinks could potentially cost him.

Am clueless tbh.  But that's my best guess.

I wonder if, at the top level, a great specialist goalkeeping coach isn't someone who'll teach you new things, but someone with a great eye for detail who will never let you off the hook. To level sport is about repetition and motivation a lot of the time.

Agree Danno. I haven't played competitive football for years, but when I did I was a goalkeeper.

One memory that stands out is a penalty shootout where I somehow managed to save 3 out of 5 pens, and we won. I was an okay 'keeper but I was very instinctive and relied on reactions.

My main memory is facing a penalty against a lad I was childhood friends with. We played football loads and he knew that, due to a broken arm at age 8, I couldn't dive as far to my left as to my right. He slotted it left and, even though it wasn't in the corner or very well struck, we both knew I wasn't getting there.

Of course top level professionals don't have such obvious deficiencies, but as you say, fine margins, and everyone has preferences when in a pressure situation. Left foot, right foot, placement, power, whatever.

That's the element of football we often take for granted - knowledge of your opponent, but also self-awareness. Strengths, weaknesses, 'go to' choices when under pressure. That's where fixture-specific coaches come in, in my opinion.

'What is X likely to do in this situation?' 'What would Y expect you to do?' All in a split second.

I think it was after the 0-3 vrs WHU, Martinez said that he could have done better with two of the goals (they were very similar) so they worked extra on that particular area
Cutler must have seen this also, during the game, so planned the session around it.
If I remember, the very next game a similar situation arose and Emi made a comfortable save.

It must be something of that nature. I’d also add that they must have an awareness of opposition strikers habits, where they generally take their shooting opportunities from, preferred side etc. Then go about emulating those patterns in training. Most keepers have the agility and ability but most also don’t know or have a sufficient awareness of the opposition. It maybe why an experienced ageing GK is far more of an asset than an agile up and coming one.

And maybe why random types like Bert Traore can be valuable.
