Can't blame Austin, don't kick the ball to the keeper especially after two corners, the big lanky F er in the yellow shirt

After the third or fourth one you’d think we’d try something different, like the short one we  cut back…

But maybe what they were trying was brilliant... if they'd just bothered their arses executing it properly?

This bloke has always attracted absolutely fucking loads of weird takes on here. I'm sure he wouldn't get nearly so much stick if he wore a suit and had short hair.

It isn't MacPhee's fault if Tielemans keeps kicking the ball straight to the first man.

Yeah, or a short suit and blue hair.

True, I can’t see MacPhee spending hours on the training pitch instructing Youri to fire the ball at the defender guarding the front post or straight into the keepers arms.

It was clear that we were having issues with the playing surface. There was no give in the surface, it played like an artificial pitch. Short corners might have given us more joy.

What has happened to all the invention on set pieces - almost every game used to have one innovative idea, we actually scored from a few - Leicester springs to mind as one clear one

They have just disappeared

Leicester were a bunch of brutes, as usual, so more inventiveness was required. Monaco weren't so big so traditional corners were probably the order of the day. Unfortunately we kept kicking them straight at the first defender of floating them at no pace for the goalie.

Certainly MacPhee is not to blame for a succession of professional footballers who cannot clear the first man from a corner - Digne and Maatson also failed last night.

And the inventive stuff is generally good IMO. However, I do think* we are well below par in terms of scoring from direct freekicks just outside the area where we try go around or over the wall, i.e., a straight shot.

Digne scored one (magnifiently) in Emery's first game when we beat Man U. Since then, I can't think of another one.

* I say 'think' as I don't have the stats and can't be bothered to look! UTV

Luiz scored one against Spurs at Villa Park late 2022/23 which put us 2-0 up until Kane dived for a penalty and another clean sheet went out the window.

I reckon they just forgot the pitch was higher than normal last night. Being on top of a building just meant they got their clearances etc wrong.

Yesterday the near post corner routine is all well and good but certainly some variation and more movement must be made on set plays let alone the delivery being below par . Every near post corner was a fail. But it must have been a tactic to aim for that area. Execution seemed way off generally yesterday.

Like all the other corners that loopered straight into an unchallenged Monaco goalkeepers hands was very frustrating to see

Set pieces truths
Upon further research:

Most of our corners are either the near post or onto the goalkeeper.  Out of nearly 140 corners only been 15 that have been outswinging
Ross Barkley has made most first contacts.

And Pau Torres is the player most aimed for for corners.
Rogers is most aimed for free kicks

Maybe this explains why they both lose more aerial duels than they win.
Rogers is worst in the squad 17%
Of 35 duels he's only won 6

Pau 35 duels seen him win 14 lost 29.

However context Villa have scored 9 set play goals only Arsenal have scored more.
Onana has scored 2 goals from set pieces

19.8% of all goals by all clubs in Premier League were set plays at the moment 25% of our goals in the league are set pieces so we are above average.

Despite this there seems to be room for improvement and I not alone feeling frustrated with set pieces

However reality is doing well from set pieces in many respects to the whole scheme of things in the league and in general for teams scoring from set plays

But why don’t we try wonderful corners like the one Tieleman scored against Young Boys anymore?
