Think it might also be a case of Emery doing right by the player too.

I know Ash said he wanted to stay, but he might have felt differently when it’s deep into January and he’s only had three sub appearances all season.

He’s played well this year, he deserves the chance to finish his career on the pitch for somebody else, rather than sat on our subs bench.

Thanks Ash, you've been a key part of our improvement since Emery has came in.

Would be ideal for somewhere like Luton.

Wish him all the best.

As others have said, we must have a plan for right back. Oh well.

Ash goes with his Villa legacy totally redeemed and then some. He's been the absolute perfect professional and I'm certain he's had a fine influence on the younger lads. I'm so happy he had this second run and that it ended with such good times.

You and me, Monty. If only he were 10 years younger. What a top pro. He not only got in the refs head, he spent time teaching our more experienced players. That kind of mentality is going to be hard to replace. Love him for not just giving his all but the way he tried to inspire those around him.

If he were he'd be on Citeh's radar and he'd be 'Highly delighted' (copyright-Dwight Yorke).

Didn't he run out of contract previously only to be offered another one pretty soon after

No, he signed a one-year deal with the option of a further year and we exercised that option.

He was on our released list, yes. He then signed up again for the following year shortly after.

I don't believe we announced he was going though, he was just on our official released list as a deal hadn't been done at that point.

Sorry to see Ash go. A new contract was more than deserved, but I suppose we'll have to wait and see who comes in before August.

Good luck, Ashley!

It’s all about Levels
He might have been kept on if we were bottom half mid table but we finished 7th
next season we are looking to push on to top 6/4 you can’t be competing with a 38-year-old if that’s where you want to be

I know other teams have done it with oldies but they are generally a lot further on than we are in squad development

It also shows the old velvet glove that Emery operates with
He’s all nice, respectful and genuine, but isn’t afraid of making tough hard even ruthless decisions

He’s the best manager we’ve had a for ages, years, decades

Indeed. If there’s ever time to trust a manager to manage this is it. In a way, presuming we get who he wants in, it’s incredibly reassuring we aren’t risking going past someone’s best years, though I’d still have had a lot of sympathy for the idea of retaining experience in the squad which he clearly was ok simply being part of.
There was a point when he was appearing in midfield where it was looking an odd signing, but what a gem he’s been second time around. It’s be great to see him go out in style somewhere as Danno says. And since Ash has been going back to roots, perhaps swerving Watford for M1 neighbours Luton isn’t such a crazy idea.

This news is hard to take.
It had to end but thought a proper send off was necessary as well as an appearance on the pitch.
Especially after Cash awful showing.
