One year contract extension to be confirmed? He's been a revelation this season.

I read he had signed for another year on Facebook this morning, rushed to H&V for confirmation and the cupboard was bare. Must have been an old post or summat. I was very tired when I read it.

Maybe I DID read it?

I wonder what he did during the summer that took him from the player he was last season to the player he is this season. He's on course to win our Player of the Season. It's a bit odd him being Club Captain, becoming a regular and rarely actually wearing the Captain's armband.

I wonder if so many players were in pier form , he just stood out more ?

But he very much deserves the extra year.

I nearly asked, but sorted my act out and googled.

https://www.11v11.com/teams/aston-villa/tab/stats/option/appearances/
An interesting list that, don’t normally look at just PL games.
For comparison, I have put in brackets their ranking for the top flight appearances (PL and division 1 games from 1888 to present) for the top 20 on that PL list. Young will soon be in the top 50.
1.(6) - Gareth Barry - 364 PL apps
2.(13) - Gabby Agbonlahor - 322 PL apps
3.(25) - Alan Wright - 260 PL apps
4.(33) - Lee Hendrie - 251 PL apps
5.(21) - Steve Staunton - 244 PL apps (281 top flight apps)
6.(40) - Olof Mellberg - 232 PL apps
7.(39) - Ian Taylor - 233 PL apps
8.(38) - Ugo Ehiogu - 228 PL apps (237 top flight apps)
9.(54) - Ashley Young - 196 PL apps
10.(59) - Gareth Southgate - 191 PL apps
11.(61) - Stilian Petrov - 185 PL apps
12.(41) - Dwight Yorke - 179 PL apps (231 top flight apps)
13.(67) - Mark Bosnich - 178 PL apps (179 top flight apps)
14.(72) - Juan Pablo Angel - 175 PL apps
15.(76) - JLloyd Samuel - 169 PL apps
16.(79) - Darius Vassell - 162 PL apps
17.(84) - Mark Delaney - 157 PL apps
18.(90) - Dion Dublin - 155 PL apps
19.(102) - Brad Guzan - 144 PL apps
20.(30) - Paul McGrath - 142 PL apps (253 top flight apps)

I understand why Young has been continously selected to play right back given the importance placed on positional play and strategy. His leadership, capability, mentality, and experience are also crucial.
What's interesting is that Young has occasionally switched into a back three with Moreno or Digne moving up high on the left side while the right back remains and doesn't go as far forward.

Young is suited for this strategy more than Cash due to a better understanding of the game.
It will be interesting to watch whether the case goes on, and I believe that be it Young or Cash will be used at right back may also rely on who is lining up further up the pitch, such as Ramsey, Bailey, and Traoré and the tactics Emery wants to use in a match.

Of course, both could be used on the right, and even to days of Scottish cafu Alan Hutton, the right back was the outlet ball.
Gerrard wanted to play fullbacks high up and wide, and Cash was sometimes the most forward Villa player.

Emery sought to change this not only in terms of personnel, with both fullbacks changed from Gerrard's tenure, but also in terms of how the defenders are playing that role.

Perhaps Ashley is just a better user of the ball.  Better passer, determined defender etc.  Cash really needs to work on his final ball.

Young has really proved me wrong this season. Wasn't happy at all when he signed up for another year last summer!

Young got into the team because Cash went to the world cup, since then he's deserved to keep his place, so he has. I honestly don't think there's anything more to it than that.

Well there is as i said in my post.
Are people not aware of the tactical change and the full back strategy that Emery has employed . And as i have clearly stated and observes the positions Young has taken up?

Just wanted to point this out to everyone for discussion.
