Yank Soccer is one of the most technical team sports in the world, made up of teams within a team.  It has to work on an individual, group and team level for the whole to function, to a much greater degree than is true in football.  If your right back is out of position the midfielder nearest can slot in and the responsibilty is shifted along the line.  If your safety misses his cover the quaterback hits the pass and a touchdown is on.

The level of coaching is so much higher than we have in football, we are talking about having a set piece coach as a new thing.  We are miles behind in terms of the level of technical coaching that exist elsewhere.  I'd be quite happy to see us develop this side of the game.
Yeah.  It does strike me that if you're paying £30m+ for a player, plus the wages that go along with that - why wouldn't you also spuend a lot of coaching that player to protect/improve that investment?

I’d undoubtedly have him as first choice in place of Targett or Cash should they get injured, suspended or need a break. He’ll get a reasonable amount of game time this season for sure.

What exactly does he offer us? A great player in his day but a liability at this level now.

Some may not rate him anymore I still do.
I would look to start if not give him minutes vs Arsenal as that extra experience and quality vs Pepe will be needed and the fact that Young is far better in my minds eye at getting forward and attacking play than Targett

Yes at all
The most recent example is last season stars.  Also Watford first match of the season the difference in quality as wing back defending vs Sarr

And then last season.

Young
26 appears
Goals 1
Assists 4
Played champions league

Targett
38 appears
Zero Goals
Assists 2
Didn't play champions league

Case closed

Targett every time for me. Young is an able back up as a sub or for injuries.

I think that's the point, though, isn't it?  Our options at left back in the summer were:

1. Have Targett and no back up
2. Get in Ashley Young as back up
3. Use a completely untested youngster as backup
4. Give Neil Taylor another 12 month contract
5. Buy a different backup leftback

To me, 1 and 4 weren't options at all.

3 might've been an option, but if those players are (at best) playing League 1 football on loan, I'm not sure they're ready for an extended run of games in the Premier League yet.

So, you're really down to Ashley Young or *somebody else*, who's willing to move to us as a backup left back.  Bearing in mind that, at the time, we were fairly confident of keeping Joe Quisling (on a new, bigger contract).  I guess you could make a case that we could've gone for a promising youngster at another club who'd been out on loan, but they'd have cost an arm & a leg if they were likely to be any good.

If Young is the answer I’d hate to know what the question was.
He shouldn’t have even been considered for a return to VP. Now that he’s here he should be nowhere near a starting position. As for being subbed on I have my concerns (see wolves at home).

We got three clean sheets in the last three meetings without him. We were two-nil up last week when he came on and lost three-two. I can't remember a single bit of "defending" he did to help prevent said collapse, and the only attacking contribution I can recall thus far is his penalty miss at Chelsea.

I'm hopeful that he'll prove a useful squad player as the season goes on, but he's done about as much to deserve a start tonight as I have.

Targett has been generally excellent for about the last eighteen months and I'd be under no rush to throw him under the bus.

You're mental. By that definition, Tuanzebe is better than Konsa because he played Champions League last year and Ezri didn't. Here's the thing though, he isn't.

To be blunt, Young is way off being adequate for this league now, past it in other words, and I can no more understand why he was brought back than I can understand why Tuanzebe was brought back.
