He was a proper leader though, bought some clever free kicks and not afraid to tell AEG to move more. Useful on and off the pitch.

He's still on the naughty step for me. Give him time though.

not afraid to tell AEG to move...
He's not alone in that respect.

I also don't remember him moaning at the ref as much as he seemed to yesterday.  I don't mind it though - I don't want Villa players to be nice and accommodating on the pitch!

He's spent the past decade at clubs who are used to having every decision go their way.

Someone has to take over that role now that the main protagonist has left.

Thought he was poor on the ball, too many times had a chance to cross and passed the ball back - and he is not a left back

Amazing how we see different things.

I saw a really assured performance from a very good left back.  I'd like to see a bit more ambition from him going foward, but he's working with ElGhazi not Grealish so I can see why either he is more reluctant or his intrustions have been more conservative than Targett last season.

I really like Matt Targett, but we're fortunate to have such a good alternative and for me it's Youngs shirt for the time being.

From memory, Targett didn't play so well in the first game out against Sheff U last season. And then had an absolute stinker against Fulham away.  Shortly after that, we played Liverpool at home and he never looked back.

He's a touch player, who needs to play to get sharp and get focused.

Barring injury, suspension or whatever, he shouldn't be dropped for a 36 year old.

Indeed he shouldn't if age is the defining factor.  Young doesn't play like a 36 year old.  He looks as fit as all the rest of them and that's why he's playing.  It's up to Target to get himself fit and back into the team on merit and to stay there. I'm sure he will soon enough.

Just before El Ghazi took the pen, for some reason You g caught my eye, and he was really geeing up all the other villa players nearby. I thought he had a decent game, but more than anything was another captain on the pitch, which is a real positive. Another leader whether he’s in the first team or not.

A solid performance by Young Vs Newcastle who deservedly kept his place though started and remained at left back

Youngy is one to have a go at other players and ref far more than Targett and brings that edge as well as quality and experience.
Certainly one to use and rotate position with Targett as MT played all of last season and now has fair competition for his place.

Well played Ash. A nice second debut . Clean sheet. Job done.
Particularly liked way gave words to the diver who tried to gain a penalty first half and then it all kicked off.
Young won't hold back with what he has to say.
Good voice to have on our team.
Good post ---sums it up imo perfectly--UTV

After one of the goals you could see him barking instructions to the huddle of celebrating players.  If my memory serves me right he was also in Southgate’s leadership team whilst at the World Cup.  This sort of personality will be vital now Terry has left.

Good to see Young keeps his place in 11 as deserves to be in the side and is one of the leaders of the team

Think his experience will help today without Mings and McGinn a player who is vocal like Ash is essential.
Interesting to see where he plays as Targett is back in too
