I've spoken to so many people who don't realise the implications of winter WC. Pubs will lose a great deal of revenue not being able to utilise outdoor space (they'll try but 2 hours is a bit different to a quick festive drink in the cold). No home bbq parties in the garden, matches will coincide with works parties and meals, no football from the 18th to the 26th and the fact that matches return on Boxing Day after more than a month will lead to plenty of arguments about family V football.

It's going to be very different.

I'm not really looking forward to this WC. Coinciding with Christmas Party Season is going to make it a nightmare in the pubs when England are playing and I'm sure the emergency services aren't relishing that particular scenario.
Waiting for the first we are going to win the world cup comments from the media

I must confess I avoid pubs when England are playing. Anyway, they are probably justifiable favourites on this occasion. Well, maybe second behind France.

It sounds absolutely shit.

It's gonna be brilliant. Every World Cup should be in the winter. Summer is for cricket.

The problem will be that Southgate will be too frightened of losing to have the courage to set up to win.

European teams have won the last 4 so we're due a South American win and it's not in Europe. I have a feeling Brasil will win it and at this rate we'll be able to go all West Ham about it.

Well they got to within a penalty shoot-out of winning the last tournament so he doesn't seem to be doing too badly.

Sick of European winners so would take that, so long as they don't act like twats again on 2nd October. Otherwise they can fuck off.

Playing the most boring safety first football you can imagine. We see glimpses with Southgate of a coach with a plan but too often his innate conservatism overrules the ability to twist and go for it.

Well, maybe. But given that Italy have won four World Cups and two European Championships, I'm not sure Total Football is a pre-requisite for international glory. Though England's strength is clearly there attacking players as the defence and goalies are only so-so, so you're right, they'd probably be better throwing off the shackles a bit. They'll go very close to winning it again, if they don't actually win it, though, regardless.

I can see a relatively early exit, actually. I don't think the conditions or the pressure will suit them, and as one of the genuine favourites, opposing teams will set up to frustrate them.

Just a hunch, admittedly; they could win every game 3-0 for all I know!

They've basically got a bye to the Quarter-Finals so would have to be spectacularly bad to make an early exit.
