The best scenario to consider is 3 teams, all on 6 points, in that case head to head is useless. That's why goal difference is generally better.

This threatened to happen in Serie A where they use head-to-head, and I was absolutely baffled by the explanations of how it was worked out. It was like Duckworth-Lewis.

Speaking of Italy, I wonder who they'll see coming in and (much trickier) who they'll see dropping out. Locatelli has had a superb tournament, but how do you leave out Verratti? Are Barella and Jorginho now looking at their places? And has Chiesa put pressure on Insigne on the left?

God imagine having these problems. Italy have lots of pretty good attackers operating in a world-class system; England have lots of *very* good attackers operating in a system that wouldn't look out of place if it were Cheltenham playing Liverpool in the Cup. Of the so-called favourites so far, Spain have been easily the most disappointing, but England are definitely the second-most.

What am I missing here?

Group B table shows Russia 2nd with 3 points and a GF of -2 and then Finland 3rd with 3 points and a GD of 0!!
????

If they both Russia and Finland draw their final games, then Scotland beat Croatia by one goal, Scotland would have a better record than second placed Russia, but not third placed Finland, so could in theory go out of the tournament at the expense of Group B's third place team despite having a better record than Group B's second placed team!

Billy Gilmour tests positive for Covid and will miss Scotland's (probable) last game.

No England player infected as they didn't get anywhere near him at Wembley.

Whilst I appreciate the gag, there were some pretty close hugs going on after the game with Mount and Chilwell. I hadnít really given Covid much thought recently, but it has the power to wreck a teams chances.

This could be disastrous. At least let us get knocked out on our own merits not because of Covid, FFS.

They've also said he's not been in contact with other players so the rest of the squad is fine - surely they will all shared transport, changing rooms, dining etc.

Presumably the others have already had negative tests. Well, that's what I'm hoping.

Not for me, goal difference every time. If you beat a team six-nil you should be rewarded for it. It also makes groups more boring. All four teams in Group C would have something to play for if goal difference is used. As head to head is used, the Netherlands vs North Macedonia match is a dead rubber.

No, if you play a team already out theyíve thrown in the towel. Far easier to rack up goals than in the opening match. Head to head is fair. We should use this in the Premier League too.

Itís bullshit. If you are 4 seats away from someone in a classroom you are a close contact and no matter how many tests you have you need to do the 10 days.

Madness. You play cavalier football and win 6-0 all the time then finish below a team because they got a jammy one-nil against you?

Just count all the matches and all the goals. Literally can't get fairer than that. And it makes matches more exciting because a team three points behind another can always finish above them. Fewer pointless matches at the end of group stages. Fewer matches where teams have, as you say, "thrown in the towel". North Macedonia, for instance, would still have a chance of qualifying.

It's the same principal as counting every vote. So if you disagree, you're basically supporting Donald Trump. 😃
