I think that over the next few months a number of players that we had high hopes for will leave. Some because they are not prepared to put in the hard graft that Gerrard will demand, and some because they are not quite as good as we (or they) thought they were.

The important thing is that that the players that remain under Gerrard will be 100% committed to Villa

He only has to listen to Gerrard's press conference today and hear him waxing lyrical over young Jacob Ramsey to see how to impress and work his way into the team.

On MOTD Ian Wright picked out Ramsey as the player he most wanted to see whilst working with Gerrard.  They quickly glossed over it.

It might just be a case of imposter syndrome. He will have had plenty of opportunities to impress Gerrard in training but he hasnít so far. He had a good relationship with DS I think now it feels like he has to prove himself all over again.

How do you know he hasn't impressed Gerrard?
Gerrard's only been in charge one game and it would have been a massive call to play Chukwuemeka in his first game.

I just don't think there is any rush for him to leave as he could certainly learn from Gerrard who knows that position better than anyone. I hope he stays but if he goes I would hope its to a German side that would actually give him game time.

Losing promising youngsters because they donít feel theyíre getting enough match time is - unfortunately - part and parcel of having a thriving academy system. Man City lost Sancho, Man Utd lost (then bought back) Pogba. It happens.

I hope it doesnít happen with Carney, but if it does, so be it.  The success of our youth system wonít be determined by the quality of players we lose along the way, but by the quality of the players who get into our first team and stay there.

Iím hopeful heíll stay and be part of the new generation who blossomed from our new focus on youth, but if he moves on, itís an opportunity created for another talented youngster to take his place.

My personal view is that Purslow will bend over backwards to keep him, given how much heís bigged him up in the media previously. There would be an element of losing face to it if he left, and I suspect purslow wont want that so soon after losing Grealish.
Thatís a very good post Smithy, so very true and some players may slip through. I do hope this one doesnít.

Indeed, and I think any player that proactively tries to leave (rather than being let go) before they'd had any significant time to work with the new manager would look pretty foolish to the outside footballing world.

If heís decided this so be it. But itíll be interesting to see where he goes if he wants first team opportunities.

if he wants to play in the first team, then a move to Stoke or Blues makes more sense than that article speaking of Liverpool etc - he won't get any game time there

One of those init. Realistically whose place is he gonna take? Obviously we don't know enough about Mr Gerrard's ideas so far but he was currently down the pecking order with Smith. With us and injuries you've always got a chance of a game but you can see why he may have become discouraged

It's a shame we had Chelsea away in the league cup first game as you imagine he'd have played in all those matches. Also worth pointing out he was on international duty most of Gerrard's first week, so he's not had much chance to impress.

If true its a ridiculous decision to make after the new manager has been at your club for ONE game.
No footballer would make that decision would they?
But if that's what he wants then fine we'll surely try and prevent it but we'll survive without him.
