Looks familiar

Safe to say it works better with the German colours.

I'd love it if they made that the badge.

We could get rid of Hercules and bring in George from Rainbow as our new mascot.

Genuine question: were we the first football club to adopt the lion as our emblem?

I'd happily switch to a hippo because the lion is so overdone, but if we were the first, I'd rather we just sue every other club or nation with a lion on their crest.

I don't mind swapping away from a lion to an animal that's genuinely brave. Lions aren't. It's a 500lb cat with razor sharp claws and teeth that hunts in packs, has no natural predators, and enjoys nothing more than a nice nap after dinner. Your average garden bird-table raiding squirrel shows more bollocks.

Genuine question: were we the first football club to adopt the lion as our emblem?

It's a good question and possibly worthy of an article by Dave W or John R.

Crests on shirts are a more modern addition than many realise so I'm sure there's room for debate over when a club adopted one. According to this we adopted the lion rampant as our emblem in 1956. https://sportslogohistory.com/aston-villa-fc-primary-logo

A brief check suggests the lion rampant was adopted by Rangers in 1959, Dundee United in 1956, Chelsea in 1953 and Millwall in 1936 so the answer is likely no. Obviously if you're discussing it with fans of one of these 4 clubs you can claim we adopted it first wearing a lion on our shirts from 1878-1880. It appears the only crest we wore pre-1956 was the non-lion one from 1886-88.

However the answer is probably Burnley who had a rather lion camp and unicorn on their crest back in 1886 or England who have had the 3 Lions crest since 1872.

“Come on you Hippos” as a chant would be a bit crap though.

Pottermus from Stoke is the worst mascot I have encountered on my away travels, though that weird mascot film they showed at Burnley away recently was surreal.

I do think our Hercules costume isn't as good as it could be. And where does he go after kick off? I always look for him but we reckon he sleeps on the roof.

I wouldn't be opposed to simplifying the kit to just have the rampant lion on. Though isn't the lion because of our Scottish links?

We could sing the "Hungry Hungry Hippos" theme song at our young and hungry stars of the future.

We first wore the Lion Rampant in 1878, though not sure if it was worn as a one-off, occasionally or in all our matches. I can't find any examples of anyone using it earlier, most clubs, including Villa, didn't bother with any sort of badge until well into the twentieth century.

Was surprised the other day to see that we regularly used to play in red and white as our home colours in the 1900s. For some reason the claret and blue was heavier and so not suited to the warmer months.

Blues’ old mascot - “Blue Nose” - was surely the most ridiculous of the lot ? I can’t be bothered searching for a picture of it on Google

Surely the guy in the boiler costume at the Baggies is the worst mascot, if not the very worst thing in the world ever?
